Use place=hamlet for an isolated settlement, typically with less than 100-200 inhabitants, although this may vary by country. For a larger isolated settlement, consider using place=village or place=town; for smaller ones with only 1 or 2 households consider using place=isolated_dwelling. For an unoccupied place, consider place=locality. For a named area within a larger populated place, such as a town, city or village consider using place=suburb or place=neighbourhood.

How to map

Place a node node at the centre of the hamlet, like the central square, a central administrative or religious building or a central road junction and add

  • place=hamlet
  • name=* - For the name of the settlement in the primary language for the territory
  • population=* - For the population of the settlement, if known
  • wikidata=* - Provides a link to Wikidata article about the feature
  • wikipedia=* - Provides a link to Wikipedia's article about the feature
