The primary railway light signals in France are based on four main shapes of chassis (châssis-écrans) with two or more lights, displaying different possible states (aspects) on a black face (cible) with a thin white border. These châssis-écrans and their variations are shown below. Unused light locations are covered, and the parasols are not installed.
