A shop selling any kind of fuel (motor fuel, charcoal, heating oil) for small to medium purposes (normal vehicles, normal heating stoves, etc.). Do not confuse this with amenity=fuel (fuel stations) which sell several varieties of motor fuel in quantities large enough to fill a full-size vehicle or truck.[1]

Fuel shops selling motor fuels are mainly found in rural areas of less developed countries for refueling motorcycles and small tractors. They are often just a house with some barrels or bottles clearly displayed. They are generally not appropriate to refuel an automobile, truck or similar large vehicle due to the larger volume of fuel those vehicles require and the relatively high cost per liter of the fuel. Such shops typically have no signage to indicate their presence nor are any other services available.

This was also the tag of choice for shops specializing in the sale of propane (LPG) for uses other than as motor fuel, kerosene (paraffin), heating oil or even charcoal and other fuels of that type. In JOSM version 14620 there is offered a new preset for shop=gas based on the Wiki page Tag:shop=gas which includes propane (LPG) sales. Thus the two tags are seemingly in conflict with one another in terms of LPG sales.

How to map

Set a node at the center of the shop or draw an area along its outline.

Tag it with shop=fuel and fuel:*=*.
