Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players on a rectangular court.
This tag can be used in association with nodes and areas marking the location of basketball-related venues. Multiple values can be used, i.e. sport=basketball;volleyball;handball, whenever the same venue is used for multiple sports.
How to map
Pitches
Basketball pitches, or courts, should be tagged with leisure=pitch + sport=basketball.
Full court
A area should be drawn along the outer marked boundaries of the court.
Court without markings
A court with no outer markings should be mapped with a node in the perceived center of the court.
These are common in outdoor play areas and they usually have one hoop.
Keys and Values
Key | Description |
---|---|
name=* | (optional) The name of the location, if any. |
leisure=* | Use this tag to describe the nature of the venue, i.e. leisure=pitch if you are marking an outdoor court or leisure=sports_centre if you are marking a whole building containing an indoor court. If the building contains multiple pitches, i.e. two courts side by side, it can be useful to mark the building as a sport centre and the individual courts as pitches. However, in this case the sport=* tag should be used only for the pitches, not for the building. |
building=yes | (optional) Use this tag if you are marking the location of an entire building. Do not use this tag if you are only marking the area of the pitch, whether inside a building or outdoor. |
surface=* | (optional) Use this tag to describe the type of surface available. For outdoor pitches see surface=* for a list of possible values. Most common are probably surface=asphalt, surface=concrete and surface=tartan, but surface=dirt, surface=earth and even surface=grass are not unheard of. For indoor pitches you might want to use surface=parquet or surface=synthetic. |
surface:condition=* | (proposed/optional) The condition of the surface is quite important for this particular sport, especially on outdoor pitches. Unfortunately there seem to be no consensus yet on how to appropriately describe/tag this characteristic. For the time being this writer recommends this proposal as it seems the most complete and sensible available. In particular the values maintained, uneven and degraded are relevant. Additional characteristics can be added after a semi-colon, i.e. surface:condition=uneven;potholes;weeds . |
lines:basketball=* | (proposed/optional) Use this tag with value "yes" whenever basketball lines are visible enough on the surface to be relied upon during the game. Whenever lines from multiple basketball pitches are overlapping you might want to specify the colour used by the particular pitch you are tagging, i.e.: lines:basketball=red. Whenever lines from multiple sports are overlapping you might want to specify additional colour lines tags i.e.: lines:soccer=black. If only basketball lines are present at the location the simplified lines=yes can be used. |
hoops=* | (proposed/optional) The number of hoops. Standard courts have two hoops, but it is not uncommon for small outdoor pitches to have only one hoop (cf. wikipedia:Streetball). More rarely there might be more than two hoops. I.e. indoor courts sometimes have additional sidelines hoops bringing the total number for the venue to four, six or even eight. However, nearby or overlapping pitches with separate sets of hoops are best treated individually whenever possible, their areas outlined separately and each area tagged appropriately. The value for this tag should be in digits (i.e. "2") rather than words (i.e. "two"). In case of retractable or removable hoops use a range i.e.: hoops=0-2. |
hoops:height=* | (proposed/optional) Use this tag to describe the height of the hoops. Use standard for regular, fixed height hoops (3.05m, 10ft). Use mini for fixed, mini-basketball hoops (2.60m, 8.53ft). Use variable for hoops that can be raised or lowered to both heights. |
hoops:nets=* | (proposed/optional) Use this tag to describe the types of nets available. Values might be chord, chain or none. |
backboards:size=* | (proposed/optional) Use this tag to describe the size of the backboards available on site. Size may be standard or small. |
backboards:shape=* | (proposed/optional) Use this tag to describe the shape of the backboards: rectangular or rounded. |
backboards:material=* | (proposed/optional) Use this tag to describe the material of the backboards. Common materials are plexiglass, metal, mesh and wood. |
Example
- sport=basketball;volleyball;handball
- leisure=pitch
- lines:basketball=red
- lines:volleyball=white
- lines:handball=yellow
- hoops=2
- hoops:height=standard
- hoops:nets=chord
- backboards:size=standard
- backboards:shape=rectangular
- backboards:material=plexiglass
Amenities
Especially for outdoor pitches it might be useful to mark the location of a nearby source of drinkable water if one is available, see amenity=drinking_water. However, this should be a separate entity rather than an additional tag on the basketball-related entity itself.
