  • Connects multiple large towns and cities with long distance, often overnight inter-city trains.
  • In Germany like IRE, IC and ICE.
  • In USA, Amtrak routes which are interstate and national in scope, neither passenger=regional (sub-national scope, sometimes intrastate) nor even shorter "commuter" routes (passenger=suburban). Examples include California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Silver Meteor, Southwest Chief and Texas Eagle, all are thousands of km long. Most Amtrak passenger=national route=trains are overnight (over their full distance) and offer various classes of sleeping accommodations.
