This key is used to annotate the fact that there is no on-the-ground sign indicating this feature's name or existence. This does not mean that an existing sign does not indicate a particular property of the feature. Other tags (such as unsigned_ref=* or *:signed=* should be used to indicate that specific properties of a feature are not shown on an existing sign. unsigned=* indicates that no sign exists.

History

This tag was first introduced as a way of signifying that the object's name was not on a physical sign. Since then, StreetComplete has encouraged the use of name:signed=no.

Other uses

Some contributors also use this tag to describe that specific information is missing in the field when it can be expected to be found. For example:

Common mistakes

The absence of a sign about a name=* or addr:housenumber=* does not mean that the object has no name or number. Do not "fix" unsigned with "no", don't add "no" without being sure that this object has no name or has no number.

See the proposal Proposed features/Noname for an overview of all the possible ways of indicating an object is unnamed.

In some cases, a highway is "officially" part of a specific route, but is not actually signed as part of that route (the designation only exists for inventory purposes). In such cases, the highway should use unsigned_ref=* instead of this tag. This tag specifically indicates a complete absence of signage. See also *:signed=* to indicate that a particular property of a specific feature is not shown on a sign.
