Map tile images
This looks like an interesting idea for coordinating yahoo sketching work on the wiki
I had exactly this kind of thing in mind myself, but was thinking of using map tiles as a way of dividing up an area. A little-known feature of the wiki is that it supports direct tile image URLs, so you could format a wiki table with tiles something like this:
Harry Wood working on this |
Free to work on |
Phase 1 complete |
Alexm working on this |
...for example.
Trouble is tile images are actually a bit too big for the purpose. Mini tiles like cloudmade's 64x64 px tiles would be better

- Hi Harry! Thanks for your suggestion. May I ask how you found my draft page :) ? Cool ... Are you active in Addis Ababa?
- I had in mind to align the working area similar like it is shown in Potlatch ... how can a user identify in Potlatch which area he is working on? Are the raster lines there the OSM tiles or is it the Yahoo tiles ... wait .. maybe that is exactly the same.
- But I like your Idea - looks much simpler than mine so far. They also have the work matrix for aerial photos in Germany. maybe it is possible to translate this app to English

- What do we have to do to be able to use the cloudmade mini tiles in the wiki as well? They always appear as a link.

- Currently only image URLs starting with http://tile.openstreetmap.org/ are allowed through as direct URL references, but actually MediaWiki has moved on a little bit since we set that up. It's now easy enough to whitelist several domains (any tiles/image servers we trust), or even set $wgEnableImageWhitelist and manage the whitelist as a (admin only) wiki page. Seems to be false at the moment, but setting this to true would probably be a good idea. I'll request this. -- Harry Wood 18:46, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- Harry, in Cuba I saw that someone traced the Yahoo Coverage as an OSM border. I used a similar approach to track progress now. What do you think about that? It looks like a much easier way to keep track of progress inside the OSM editor than always using the Wiki... --Alexm 09:48, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
