Editing without authentication
"edit nodes without entering your username and password"
Please don't do this. When others have set up around this basis we have asked them to stop because its impossible to deal with vandalism and data abuse

- Note that I created this wiki page to document the tool, but the author User:Nitegate is not necessarily paying any attention to the wiki page or the comments here. You'll probably need to message him more directly.
- BTW it's a user account called amenityeditor the tool is using

I found several wrong nodes created with the user amenityeditor, for example one which name was an URL to a google map page! I contacted the user amenityeditor but didn't get an answer till now. I will now remove this node. It's not easy to spot the nodes created by this user account amenityeditor: Because they are likely to be misspelled, often a bot like xybot modifies them.--Blue-storm 12:31, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- Well what d'you mean by wrong nodes? this tool is designed to be very easy, and may attract new users, who may be more likely to make bad edits by mistake, but overall that's good news. More new users making edits. We encourage people to invent ways of making editing easier.
- The problem is, saving edits from all users via a single account 'amenityeditor' (although easier for the user) is circumventing the identification mechanisms of OpenStreetMap.
- Apparently this is now fixed. Amenity editor uses OAuth and requires users to login and identify themselves to OpenStreetMap as it should. That doesn't mean that the users are any less likely to create "wrong nodes", in fact it may now be less clear that they are amenity editor users (certainly harder to group edits by amenity editor users) but it does mean you can look them them up individually, see how long they have been editing, see what else they have done, and message them to welcome them to the project and help them understand tags etc.

Amenity and Buildings
The Editor is a great tool, but a disadvantage is that you can't edit amenitys that are areas. Especially when the areas are buildings people tend to map the amenity twice, because the tags of building doesn't show up in the editor. --Hillhome 21:01, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
