Talk:Crossings in the United Kingdom
crossing:markings=zebra;dots
I believe that crossing:markings=zebra;dots is more prevelant here. Puffin and Toucan can have zebra stripes with dots, or just the dots. Zebra must have stripes and dots to be a zebra_crossing. Stripey crossings in supermarket carparks often (always?) just have stripes. Jnicho02 (talk) 09:19, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- For zebra crossings across roads, zebra;dots is usual (see the diagrams in Schedule 14 TSRGD), but the dots can be omitted. When the zebra crossing is over a cycle track, the dots are usually (always?) omitted. They also seem to be absent for the pedestrian part of parallel crossings. I have never seen zebra stripes at a puffin or toucan crossing, although coloured asphalt, paving stones, rainbow stripes or other artistic designs between the dots are relatively common. We could do with something like crossing_ref=informal_zebra for the zebra-like crossings on privately owned service roads, as almost anything bar a new iD-ism would be better than the not:crossing_ref=zebra which I currently use. --Rskedgell (talk) 15:54, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- You are right about stripes on a puffin/toucan. I take that back. I think I meant coloured block as I saw a red one in Manchester.... as for unofficial stripy crossings, I just leave the crossing_ref tag off completely..... I was wondering whether the dots were what signified an 'official' crossing, as when it crosses a cycle track it isn't a full-on 'Zebra'? Jnicho02 (talk) 16:11, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- The reason I think we should have a crossing_ref tag for these is both so that they can be differentiated and also as protection from the developers of an editor or QA tool arbitrarily deciding in the future that any crossing with crossing:markings~zebra should be incorrectly "upgraded" to crossing_ref=zebra. Zebra crossings over cycle tracks on public highways are still zebra crossings, but the Belisha beacons are omitted, as are the zigzag lines (an indication that motor vehicles are prohibited from stopping or overtaking being irrelevant). --Rskedgell (talk) 09:31, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

Crossings at traffic lights without pedestrian signals
At the moment, the tagging of these is a little inconsistent. There are crossings at junctions here the flow of traffic is controlled by traffic signals, which are usually marked with dots. However, there are no separate pedestrian signals, no button operation, no sound signals and no tactile signals. Although these can be tagged as crossing=marked/uncontrolled, this does not tell data consumers that pedestrians crossing may need to wait for the lights to change. If the draft Proposal:Crossing_signalization is approved, then perhaps crossing:signals=shared could be used here, along with button_operated=no + traffic_signals:sound=no + traffic_signals:vibration=no. --Rskedgell (talk) 09:41, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
