Talk:Environmental OSM
Current Status
15/03/2010: Following a session discussing Envrionemntal OSM at WhereCampEU on 12 March 2010 it seems like there is a lot of overlap between the goals of this project and a number of ongoing investigations / projects outside OSM. This project cannot be tackled all at once.
- There were discussions about the temporal nature of some of the data requried for this project in terms of being able to distinguish the real world data change over time vs the input / fixing of data over time. There are a number of unanswered questions regarding temporal issues in this kind of dataset.
- There is also recognition of numerous projects ongoing outside OSM & being wary of duplicating data.
- E.G. Mapping of deforestation from Landsat / NDVI remote sensing initiatives.
- Data imports are also possible, however, caution was noted about this due to issues OSM has had with data imports in the past.
- Clear definitions of needs / actors is needed.
- Sub-projects need to be defined
Tagging ideas
- Carbon offset projects
- Reforestation
- Conservation based forest management
- Landfill gas
- Waste heat recovery
- Pollution
- A data request has been rejected as a potential source for OSM ref.
- The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have banded together to launch http://www.protectedplanet.net/ (description) which harnesses the World Database on Protected Areas. What does this mean for this initiative - there is a lot of environmental data in OSM already - but are we just duplicating what they have done?
- Proposal for landuse=allotments to have sub-tag allotments=plot, naming an area as an individual plot
- A proposal to tag reusable packaging, is open for voting until Sunday, May 30. Please add your vote and/or comments there. --Flo Edelmann (talk) 11:49, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
New mailing list outdoor-natural
As this list has some overlap with the goals of this project I will leave a pointer here. I would especially like to gather some more people knowledgeable in various aspects of geology and vegetation so that a new landcover framework could be developed allowing decent mapping of vegetation and other natural features. I was thinking about a concept of vegetation layers and zones but I think we need to look at examples from various ecosystems to see how to do it best
https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/outdoor-natural
The main topic of this list are discussions related to the mapping (and proposals of mapping) of:
- outdoor sports
- wilderness and natural features
It should cover everything from scuba diving to paragliding, from undersea volcanoes to Mount Everest, from corral reefs to rain forest vegetation.
The list can also cover related software and technical discussion of offline OSM based maps.
Main language is English, all languages welcome.

Import data from Environmental Organizations and Departments
In order to find out the best information architecture and datatypes we need for this project, we could study the materials produced by already-established environmental groups.
- List of Environmental Organizations
- List of Environmental Government Agencies
- List of Supranational Environmental Agencies
For each organization, we can collect maps and reports. If there's any way to overlay images (maps) for the purpose of digitizing them and turning them into actual positional data, that would be useful.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Sustainability index
We could add an emissions data value (ex: g CO2/km*pax) to each transportation type. This would provide the necessary data for a routing service to compare carbon emissions, etc. Also would give way to loosely calculate the impact of existing routes. Lots of cool possibilities with this idea.
Transport mean | Passengers average |
Emissions (g CO2/km*pax) |
---|---|---|
Train | 156 | 14 |
Small car | 4 | 42 |
Big car | 4 | 55 |
Bus | 12.7 | 68 |
Motorbike | 1.2 | 72 |
Small car | 1.5 | 104 |
Big car | 1.5 | 158 |
Plane | 88 | 285 |
Ship | – | 245 |
