A Ferry Boat carries cars and other vehicles. How to tag "standard" boat lines, only for passengers. There are plenty of them all around the world, used as tourisic attractions, for sightseeing, as public transportation,... ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by HB9DTX (talk • contribs)

Those are ferries too; you can use motor_vehicle=no if it's passenger-only. --NE2 13:35, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. How about if we are dealing with the opposite situation: you have some ferry services that will not accept foot passengers, such as the Dover-Dunkirk Services? (e.g. http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/Customer-Service/dover-dunkirk/FAQs/#FAQ5) -- Sav

Ferries carry passengers, bicycles, cars, ... to the other side. However, one should by default assume that only passengers by foot are carried over. To clarify who is carried, use access=*, e.g. bicycle=yes when bicycles are allowed, foot=no if foot passengers are not allowed, ...

The ferry systems I'm familiar with do take cars and trucks. I don't think that there is an assumption that ferries default to passengers only. A better recommendation is to tag what is allowed.
