Mentor commitment

Can someone who was a mentor share how much time can it be expected to take? Obviously, it is going to be massively depending on project/student but even a rough estimate can be helpful. Especially, how much extra time can be expected in addition to work that would be needed if someone would appear with such pull request in a regular way? • As a rule of thumb, you should plan about 2h/week as a mentor with a bit more time at the beginning and the end of the project. You should also plan some time during the candidate selection phase where you need to answer questions from the prospective candidates. As we require candidates to do some work before applying, the maintainers of the project will get some additional review work in that phase. --Lonvia (talk) 18:51, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Stricter filtering

Is it OK to limit potential people to one who contributed to repository before project was announced? Or propose participation in GSoC to them in private without publishing public proposal? Or is such very strict filtering is incompatible with the program? (it is motivated by quite clueless people bombarding all projects with requests to explain completely basic things and being unlikely to end as productive contributors). • Google has a rather strong requirement this year (more so than in last years) that participants be newcomers to open-source/the project. So you can't have people who are regular contributors already. You should announce all projects publicly to give people an equal chance but you can still personally invite specific people to the project, no problem there. In fact, please do advertise among your OSM mapping community. We'd rather have people who are familiar with OSM. Regarding your concern about being bombarded: our requirement to do a little PR as part of the application process proved quite efficient to keep down the completely basic requests. The number of requests we get per year is more in the area of a couple of dozens over all subprojects.
