Mynarski neighbourhoods

Not obsoleted, because there are other values. In the city of Winnipeg, for example, we have officially-defined neighbourhoods, subdividing wards, subdividing community committees (all recorded as place=suburb). Without this tag, there's no way to record the information that this is the Mynarski neighbourhood, and it is not inside the Mynarski ward. —Michael Z. 2011-04-14 17:52 z

I assume this is a response to a comment written on the page "(this is obsolete by "admin_level=*"? or not?)"

Your explanation doesn't fit with anything written on the page currently. So far this tag is being used for...

• Stuff imported in the U.S. (to me this definitely seems like it should've been using admin_level instead)
• Something to do with maritime borders
• ...and now you're saying something to do with Mynarski neighbourhoods

I'm confused. Seems there's a few people using the same tag for completely different things.

Yeah, I'm saying this is not obsolete.

It is needed because there are different types of overlapping subdivisions having the same admin_level=*, and sometimes even the same name, so only border type=* differentiates them. The situation has been slightly improved by the recent acceptance of place=neighbourhood below place=suburb. But the fact remains that in my city, border_type is needed to properly differentiate legally-defined civic community committees, community areas, neighbourhood clusters, wards, neighbourhoods, and other subdivision types from each other, including a few cases where a large ward has a name identical to that of a much smaller neighbourhood, which may or may not be contained within it. —Michael Z. 2012-06-19 19:23 z

Use by Mapnik

It turns out that key:border_type is used by Mapnik to render county boundaries at zoom levels 9 and 10. Mapnik needs to switch to using key:admin_level to do this type of rendering. -- DENelson83 (talk) 21:58, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
