The capital is defined via the admin_centre role. This is necessary not only to define its location, but also to enable name tags in multiple languages. All instances of the capital_city=* key should therefore be replaced. It's actually not even geodata. --Fkv (talk) 09:29, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
This doesn't seem useful
There is already the tag capital=*, why would we need another tag for the same? --Dieterdreist (talk) 11:36, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
- As Fkv said,
admin_centre is what would take the place of capital_city=*, not capital=*. This is because capital_city=* is from the perspective of the larger admin division, just as
admin_centre is, while capital=* is used on the smaller place, inside the larger admin division, to mark it as the capital of a higher admin division. So if you choose to remove capital_city=* from a place, you should replace it by adding the capital city as
admin_centre to the boundary relation, rather than simply by just replacing the key with another key which is used for different purposes.--Aenet (talk) 16:56, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- I don't understand what you write about smaller place and larger and higher admin divisions. The capital=* is used to mark the highest administrative rank (i.e. lowest admin_level number) that a settlement (which is seat of an administration) has, it is a simple way to express administrative importance. --Dieterdreist (talk) 22:06, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- capital=* is used on a city/town/village/municipality to designate it as the capital of a province/state/region/country/nation/etc. at some admin level (e.g. 2,4,5). capital_city=* is used on a province/state/region/country/nation/etc. to specify which city/town/village/municipality (name in plain text) is its capital.
admin_centre links the city/town/village/municipality node to the province/state/region/country/nation/etc.'s boundary relation.
- Essentially, I agree that capital_city=* is redundant, but I argue that
admin_centre on the boundary relation is the appropriate replacement, not capital=*. Although both is better. --Aenet (talk) 06:38, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I also agree capital_city=* is redundant, and I also agree that
admin_centre is the more powerful approach, and that capital=* is a simplification that can not express the same information, particularly in situations where the same place has an administrative role for several administrative entities. --Dieterdreist (talk) 09:22, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
