embankment on both sides
description says lower part on the right side of the way. What happens with a railway=* or highway=* with embankments on both sides ? --Skyper 12:10, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
embankment on one side
I often find embankments on one side of a railway=* or highway=* sometimes even with a cutting on the other. I propose to use embankment=both/left/right/none and cutting=both/left/right/none.--Skyper 12:00, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- I don't know what's best, but there are even bridges like this. --NE2 12:18, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- IMHO this should be tagged separately, like half_viaduct=* --Vovanium 22:06, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- I completely agree that single and double sided embankments should be tagged explicitly different. I think embankment:right=yes is also reasonable (see Proposed features/right left). --Vovanium 22:06, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- Since cutting=yes/left/right is established, it makes sense to me to use embankment=yes/left/right too. It is also clear and simple. I suppose someone may find some rare case where embankment=no would be needed. Perhaps just for clarity, as in the case oneway=no.--Zstadler (talk) 15:45, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
- Agreed, sided embankment is needed. Florimondable (talk) 16:26, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
One-side embankments with no cutting on the other side are common near river banks. See example at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tver_embankment_1.jpg --Zstadler (talk) 15:58, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
Photo of an embankment
Isn't the photo File:Embankment.jpg rather showing a cutting=*? it is used on many map feature pages. At wikipedia:Embankment (transportation) there would be alternative images. In fact the English page here missed a photo/drawing. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 01:55, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Oh, wait... It is an embankment of the railway, right? Huh, I map railways too seldom and the perspective is problematic. ;-) Comments still welcome! --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 01:57, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Remove reference to man_made=dyke?
There are references here to a tag that is obsolete. Presumably I can remove them? eteb3 (talk) 20:15, 25 October 2019 (UTC) (newbie on the wiki)
- The tag man_made=dyke has been used almost 14,000 times and has a wiki page. According to https://taghistory.raifer.tech it's usage has been growing steadily. A dyke (or levee) is different than an embankment, because it is always two-sided and is designed to control water specifically. --Jeisenbe (talk) 23:25, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
