Line breaks

- Looking at Taginfo, the spaced slash
/has also been used for line breaks – maybe even more often than the vertical bar|. Besides, outside of OSM, the slash seems to be used more often than the vertical bar to represent line breaks (see also [1]). --Dafadllyn (talk) 07:31, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

- I just noticed the wiki has be changed recommending "/" instead of "|". I just want to point out that "/" also is used in inscriptions (example1, example2 ecc.). I also think that requesting the slash to be spaced ("wasting" 2 characters for every line) isn't a good idea with max255 characters. I didn't really understand this was a proposal to change the rule tbh --Ivanbranco (talk) 13:08, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
Chinese Tanghao (堂號)
For the case of building=house's w:zh:堂號s, I am using this Key:inscription as a better choice than name=*.
- The w:zh:堂號s are inscribed over the doorway.
- There may be many of the same w:zh:堂號s all along the road. Thus we see they are not unique names that people would refer to them when asking directions.
- etc.
- Also Key:inscription seems good for family names sometimes seen on houses: "The Smiths", "The Jeffersons", "陳寓"…

- @Jidanni: That sounds pretty reasonable. I'm not as familiar with tanghao, but it sounds like they could be a useful source for owner=* as well. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 20:48, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Splitting in language versions
If the inscription is multi-lingual, it might make sense to split in "inscription" for the primary language and "inscription:xx" for additional languages. Possible extra benefit - might make the inscription fit in the tag length limit. --Richlv (talk) 18:09, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
Different sides
A related question to #Line breaks above is which character(s) to use to divide inscriptions on different sides of an object like a historical boundary stone. Maybe it would make sense to double the line break character (e.g. inscription="line 1 / line 2 // reverse side line 1 / reverse side line 2"). --Dafadllyn (talk) 07:31, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
