What would be valid values? Cigar or cigars? --Stillhart (talk) 20:08, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

I think valid values are describing the availability of tobacco for sale, so it would be 'yes', 'no' and maybe 'limited' or something similar. Yes and no are the only values in use (plus some single variations of "tobacco" and typos https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/sells:tobacco#values If you want to be specific about cigars or other kind of tobacco like pipe tobacco, you could invent new tags like sells:cigars=yes/no or tobacco=cigarettes;cigars. Once you start, maybe you would want to add the kind of cigars as well? --Dieterdreist (talk) 20:49, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Talking as a cigar smoker, it's not so easy to find cigar shops or shops that sell cigars. Similar situation for cigar bars. The issues is that cigars are quite smoky and not always accepted. Also cigars require special storage in a humidifier, so it's some kind of specialty store. Where as the typical corner tabaco shop is slightly another thing. Related, the shisha people managed to get their own category: amenity=hookah_lounge. --Stillhart (talk) 08:59, 13 July 2024 (UTC)

You can use any tag you like in OpenStreetMap, but if you want others to catch up and help with the mapping, you should talk about it, make a tagging proposal, etc. —Dieterdreist (talk) 09:09, 13 July 2024 (UTC)

difference between "tobacco" and "sells:tobacco"?

What is the differece between this tag and the more used just "tobacco" key? --Lukas458 17:43, 10. April 2019 (UTC)

I am not sure there is a difference, at least not for the documented meaning it seems. This tag is clearer about what it is (selling tobacco) as opposed to „tobacco“ which could be read as an access restriction or subtype as well. —Dieterdreist (talk) 06:15, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

description

[1] @Dieterdreist: Why? In the article there is already: "For shop=tobacco shops this is implied", so it's true that this tag won't be used with shop=tobacco. maro21 00:50, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

The property could be added to tobacco shops as well, like you write, it is also written that "it is implied", which means it is also suitable for tobacco shops (but not needed nor suggested if the value is "yes"). --Dieterdreist (talk) 19:16, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
But "implied" means that we don't add the tag because it is... implied. Like foot=no on highway=motorway. maro21 13:53, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
There is no requirement for the place to not be a tobacco shop, so let’s not add one out of nothing. There would be no harm or problem if people added the tag to tobacco shops, although I would not do it because it seems to add nothing. —Dieterdreist (talk) 10:44, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
