Use on linear ways and relations

Dieterdreist, why did you add onWay and onRelation = yes? When would this tag be used on a linear way or a route relation? I believe it is used only on bike shops and similar facilities which rent bicycles, which are mapped as nodes or areas. According to overpass-turbo and taginfo it has only been used on 3 relations. Hi Jeisenbe, excuse me for replying here only after reverting some of your changes, I did not notice it before. I added "onWay" and "onRelation" because it is a possible use of this property. Any feature where it could make sense can have these tags. There is no need to restrict the usage to nodes and polygons, e.g. a feature represented as a site relation could have the tag as well, and indeed, there is a relation feature which has the tag. IMHO we should not impose the kind of objects where tags may apply to, but rather leave this up to the mapper. Generally, any tag may be used on a relation, because there can be all kinds of relations, so it is impossible to exclude them a priori. Generally, if we really need to restrict usage to certain geometry types, this should be restricted to feature tags, and not to properties (IMHO). --Dieterdreist (talk) 12:48, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

I think you are misinterpreting how the properties in the InfoBox are used. They are meant to describe the common usage of a tag. In this case, the tag has never been used on a linear way, and has only been used on 1 relation which is not an area - and actually I think the site relation is mostly in area in this case, since it mainly consists of polygons, with just 2 extra nodes added (similar to many multipolygons in practice). Since 99.9% of all features with this tag are mapped as nodes or areas currently, it is not helpful to add "onWay" and "onRelation". Mappers and database users are also going to see the Taginfo stats, and can check that if they are interested in learning more about strange outliers. --Jeisenbe (talk) 08:12, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
