What do people think of this tag?
We don't really have the problem with english street names much, but I've been mapping in Brazil recently where every street name begins with "Rua" or "Avenida" coming before the interesting bit of the name. I guess MapOSMatic probably screws up quite badly there ...or maybe not. I haven't tried. There is an alternative. Software can of course, have exceptions for certain common "prefix" words. Strip out every "Rua" prefix from names for example. This tag is a more labour intensive burden on the mapper, but on the flipside it would make less work for data users (if widely adopted), and would be more reliable/consistent across countries and weird exception cases.
What do other people think of this tag? I imagine this sorting problem, and probably this solution, will have been discussed somewhere in the past.

- This example seems to indicate that MapOSMatic is actually able to handle cases like "Rue de la Chadotte" or "Rue du Champ May" properly. I think that software dealing with this by itself for common prefix words is generally a better option than doing it manually for every single "Rue", "Rua" etc., just like we leave it to software to introduce abbreviations for these common cases (as per Names#Abbreviation (don't do it)). I could see this key being useful for uncommon cases, but not for every single street in the languages where this is a common occurrence. --Tordanik 01:23, 29 April 2012 (BST)
- I propose to add some phrases to description:
- a) it is recommended to solve the problem of sorting automatically (not by adding sorting_name key to all objects) in standart cases
- b) the key sorting_name is really necessary in non-standart/complicated cases.
- c) although adding of key sorting_name in standart cases is not the best idea, it is not a mistake. Dinamik 19:47, 30 April 2012 (BST)
