Water values
As mentioned on the discussion page, values such as grey water, non-potable water, recycled water values were brought up.
- non-potable means it is undrinkable for some reason. a good value.
- grey water is the nickname for water that has been throughly processed for reuse, but is considered for health/legal reasons is not intended for drinking. some cities drink it, some cities treat it as a health hazard, only for plant watering. Sounds like recycled water. I guess that is distinct from treated sewage (meets the minimum requirements for dumping into a water body).

Why water is "fresh water for drinking purposes"? It's generic. At least need a subtag

- Well but there is a problem here :) I still don't know how to tag a pipe with an unknown type of water. So I'm going to bar the "fresh - for drinking purposes". Maybe the drinking_water=* attribute is applicable here? Together with drinking_water:legal=no if the water is not accessible? --redrat 20:30, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
- How do we tag polluted rainwater? How can we establish whether rainwater is polluted or not? I would remove the "unpolluted" addition from "rainwater". Also, there are now many tags to say "water", namely there are "sewage", "hot_water", "waterwaste", "drain", "rainwater", "steam", "slurry", and while for sewage and slurry it may be questionable to see them as "water", the rest seems less ambiguous. Is "substance" the correct key to make distinctions of temperature, pressure and state? --Dieterdreist (talk) 12:08, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
Pneumatic tubes
How to tag pneumatic tube transfer systems? Perhaps substance=pneumatic? Or maybe substance=capsules (another name for them is "capsule pipelines")? For now I think I'll use substance=pneumatic, since it is clearer (they are most commonly known as pneumatic tubes), and although it is not a substance, substance=cable is not a substance either :-) ). --Abbafei (talk) 08:20, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
heat ?
substance=heat is not a substance either. Better use substance=heating_water or substance=steam or substance=heating_fluid if unknown. --Seawolff (talk) 23:18, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
Use Fuel Key Additionally
Currently the substance=fuel tag is recommended for gasoline (petrol) only. The large amount of different fuels like petrol, diesel, E10, CNG, LNG will lead to an exploding number of different values. We should:
- use the tag substance=fuel as generic term and
- add the key fuel=* to specify the exact kind of fuel in the pipeline.
For doing this the current meaning of substance=fuel needs to be changed. This change would be backward compatible. --Hb 18:33, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
