This whole discussion is like voting for which properties a perpetuum mobile should have. I think that before we vote on the properties, we should show that it is at all possible to build such a thing. We're collecting map data, and facts cannot be copyrighted. Only the aggregate can be covered by database protection for 15 years from the year of publication. On January 1, 2022 our current planet.osm dumps will enter the public domain, no matter what we do. Our generated (SVG, osmarender, gnuplot) map images, on the other hand, are probably covered by traditional copyright until 70 years have passed after the death of their creator. But that's the creator of the map, not the creators of the underlying map data. So, the issue becomes: what if somebody produces a map image based on planet.osm and decides to "reserve all rights" to that image, can we license the planet.osm dump in a way that stops this? Bruce89, your comments are always welcome, membership is not required.
