Talk:Mapping projects
Rename the page e.g. call it 'Mapping Projects'
I think this page title OpenStreetMap:Community Portal is pretty vague and not well matched to the purpose we are using the page for.
Also having it in a seperate 'OpenStreetMap' namespace is a throwback from wikipedia structure which is meaningless (an unnecessary confusion) in this context.
I propose we rename the page to 'Mapping Projects'
Note that this would not break any links. We would create a wiki redirect of course. It would also involve changing the link in the side bar (see MediaWiki Talk:Sidebar) -- Harry Wood 10:50, 15 May 2007 (BST)
- OK I've gone ahead and done this change, including changing the sidebar link. I've also gone around and fixed most of the links to point directly to the new name (rather than via redirect) -- Harry Wood 19:33, 1 July 2007 (BST)
Organising Africa
We should promote mapping of Africa. One thing to do, is to set up WikiProjects (i.e. Set them up before anyone does any mapping, as a way of attracting people to do mapping) Trouble is there's a lot of countries in Africa. 53 including all the island groups. Maybe be could have wikiprojects covering 'regions' divided like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Africa-regions.png ...or is it a silly idea to have WikiProjects and nobody working on them? -- Harry Wood 10:40, 23 August 2007 (BST)
- I personally like the idea of keeping it to individual countries, currently the countries listed on the Mapping Projects each have someone working on them. The next edition of Spatial Data Infrastructure - Africa Newsletter is likely carrying a small piece about OSM in Africa and promoting further development. (August edition has tiny reference to OSM South Africa) -- Firefishy 12:42, 23 August 2007 (BST)
- Countries of Africa should be listed as a single set like for Europe or Asia, instead of those weird, small categories. That would avoid rejecting countries of North Africa in "Other" (!), forgetting Mauritania... If nobody has objection, I can make that change SN74LS00 23:05, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Kyrgyzstan
Krygyzstan is not the correct country name, it should be Kyrgyzstan
Where is the logic in names sorting ?
The title says "By country" but we have "continent/country". I would like in France make something similare to UK with sub-parts of the country. But I cannot write Guadeloupe, French Polynesia or Guyane in the Europe section! Would it not make sense to remove continents and just keep a long, single list of countries sorted by alphabetic order ? -- Pieren 15:03, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Humanitarian OSM team
Maybe the Humanitarian OSM Team could be added to the specialized projects. (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Humanitarian_OSM_Team)

- yes OK -- Harry Wood 01:10, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Political History Map
I was looking everywhere on the web for a map where you can move a bar back and forth and see historical boundaries change, but I couldn't find anything. I don't know how difficult it would be to integrate, but the data is already available. Later on, if the data can be found, perhaps other metadata could be added like city population and we could see cities flare up like stars, or dwindle during the black death. But, even the most basic incorporation of historical borders would be of tremendous value. Does anyone have any idea where to start? --JGould 08:48, 22 October 2011 (BST)
- The only time-slider map I know of (off the top of my head) is the individual contributor heatmap, mine located here. Are there other time-slider implementation of maps using OSM data around? --Ceyockey 01:42, 25 October 2011 (BST) (P.S. I did not find your username as available in this resource. have you edited the map under a different username?)
- I like this idea, but at a time scale that for the most part we don't have history for. This is something similar to what I'm thinking: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Australia_history.gif This is a not very exciting example, but imagine plotting the rise and fall of the Roman empire, or the battles over South East Asia by the Siamese, Angkor and Cham empires. I think it will really help us understand history better and wouldn't take much work compared to what OSM has already done! --Kizza 11:41, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
I was the lead developer some time ago of such an app (Peace PRISM), for similar purpose. It's Affero GPL and code is available (link below). There is demo video and documentation here: [1] [2] [3]. The Peace PRISM source code is on one of the above pages. For a quick start, I can provide you the virtual machine on which we deployed the server (this stopped for lack of funding for a dedicated server).

Parking
There exists no large scale inventory of parking supply. This data is of use not only to drivers, but to city planners and researchers trying to understand that allocation of space in cities, and the transportation networks holding cities together. Open Street Map already has the tags necessary for labeling on street parking, but it is an underreported attribute. Off street parking structures are better mapped, but often are missing the capacity attribute. While the primary purpose of OSM is perhaps to map the network of roads, in thinking about the transportation network as a system, the terminal capacity is also an important variable worth promoting to the contributors of OSM.
