Linked to www.openstreetmap.org/copyright

Just to note here the obvious update...

The page now simply links http://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright and all the translations have also had their content removed.

I think that was to reduce effort for the legal experts who were reviewing various docs after the license change. It essentially duplicated that site, and these day we encourage people to link http://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright instead. As such this wiki page isn't very useful any more and we should mostly be de-linking it from everywhere

Well, umm, with the change as of 2012-09-12 this page no longer contains the license statement for the wiki (it was: "OpenStreetMap Wiki contents can be used freely under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 license. No license change will take place."), but this page is linked from every page footer! Likely we should just change the footer to link directly to creativecommons cc-by-sa 2.0. Agree? --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 21:17, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
Could be worth creating a page called "Wiki content license" specially to describe this. It's just a link to CC-BY-SA2 Although on that page we might also try to be very clear that this is not the same license as the OpenStreetMap data, plus there's some interesting caveats on wiki content licensing -- Harry Wood (talk) 22:06, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
This sounds good! Caveats: images have different licenses, may have no license at all (maaaybe it could be assumed that they are under the wiki text license and that the uploader is the author...), images may be bing/yahoo screenshots. Text authors are listed under the "history" tab. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 05:04, 12 April 2016 (UTC) Created: Wiki content license. Please enhance and then change the link in the footer. :-) Currently I do not know the right system message/template of the footer, but can help to find it if you need help. Cheers --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 18:41, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

We need to change $wgRightsPage in LocalSettings.php (see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Footer ) to be "Wiki content license" instead of "OpenStreetMap License" (should be the current value, if I understand correctly). --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 23:16, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Ah yes $wgRightsPage. I think I've found the right place in the chef repo for this change. Made a pull request
I also had a pass writing some caveats and making the top bit clearer on Wiki content license.
I guess we might also tweak the text in MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning to refer to the Wiki content license page
-- Harry Wood (talk) 16:28, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
Fine, thank you! I've made some further tweaks, please check. Regarding MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning: yes, go ahead. :-) --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 20:48, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
Just tweaked MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning and my PR was merged & deployed. All done! -- Harry Wood (talk) 21:46, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
Great! A minor bit – could you please change to: Our [[wiki content license]] is [//creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ CC BY-SA 2.0]? The abbreviation is the one CC uses on their page and https is possible for their server.
Oh, interesting: MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning contained "OpenStreetMap wiki contents (including images)" (note the "images"!). However, I quite doubt that all image uploader's who did not add an explicit license to an image read this. ;-) What was on the image upload page? Anyway, I would not have a good feeling telling everybody that old images with no explicit license are cc-by-sa by the uploader.
MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning: no translated message versions - so other languages use the MediaWiki default (e.g. French page and French default message with $ placeholders: MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning/fr) – still old. I am not sure how to set these variables right now. Or is this just a caching issue? Cheers --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 19:28, 26 April 2016 (UTC)
