Talk:Portal:Users
The Portal: namespace appears not to exist
I don't mean to be rude, but it seems the OSM Wiki does not yet have a true Portal: namespace, and thus this page appears to be actually in the Main namespace. See my comments on how to fix this: Category_talk:Portals. Teratornis 22:09, 4 Aug 2006 (BST)
'Portal'? and 'User' too vague
Is this a "portal"? Not really. A portal should be a page consisting primarily of links to let you view and access the website/project, from a particular perspective. This seems to be a quick guide to using OSM, with some bits of info summarised from various parts of Help Documentation. Not really sure how to make it more portal-like. OpenStreetMap:Community Portal is more of a portal...
But there's another question. What goes on a community portal as opposed to a user's portal? Should we merge them? Should we rename them? I'm thinking both words 'user' and 'community' are too ambiguous. -- Harry Wood 01:06, 8 September 2006 (BST)
- I just realised the (probable) intended purpose of this page! I assume the intention was a portal for the people who are mapping, or looking to learn to map. Likewise there could be a Portal:Developers. If this page is regarded useful, perhaps it should be renamed to refer to the specific type of user it is aimed at. (Reading up I'm echoing what Harry said..) Perhaps the community portal should be "Worldwide portal? (It doesn't even need the word portal). The link on the left nav bar could read "Mapping by Country"? --Rickm 10:06, 23 September 2006 (BST)
Community Portal has now been moved to Mapping projects, so that's better.
What about this page? In addition to Portal:Users we now have the Mapper page, which is a better title, and (as a result) has more focussed content. As I said before, this seems to be a quick guide to using OSM, with some bits of info summarised from various parts of Help Documentation, it's a summary of a variety of aspects of OpenStreetMap. Not really a bad thing except...
A) The name suggests that it is something else. A useful portal starting point for all active 'users' (whoever they are)
B) We also have Help Documentation, Beginners' Guide, and too many other pages summarising OpenStreetMap (as discussed on Talk:Beginners' Guide)
It would be a shame to throw this information away, particularly as there has been some translation effort, but it seems to have fallen out of favour in the linking structure anyway. As part of WikiProject Cleanup I'd like to do something with this. But I'm not sure what.

Not intended to go on the article, but interesting!
This isn't intended to go on the article, but some might find it interesting!

"When Phyllis Peasall, born 100 years ago on Monday, got lost on her way to a party in 1930s London, she set about designing her own street map of the capital. The result - the A-Z - has become a byword for city atlases across the UK."

Delete proposal
This page has not had a content update in years. It is outdated and/or incomplete in many aspects - exclusive focus on GPS-based mapping, no mention of editors beside JOSM, ancient screen shots, a focus on Osmarender that is out of place in an introductory text, ... -, and overlaps with other pages such as the Beginner's Guide, the JOSM/Guide and the Map Making Overview. So I think there is no point in keeping this around any longer. --Tordanik 17:36, 1 April 2012 (BST)
- I agree. It's a shame because for some reason everyone went to a lot of translating effort on page back when it was first created. Should we delete the translations too? -- Harry Wood 09:47, 19 June 2012 (BST)
- The German version is just a redirect to a translation of Help:Contents, not a translation of this page. I don't feel competent to judge whether the content on the other translations is also available elsewhere. You could always insert {{Delete proposal}} templates there and wait for reactions, though. --Tordanik 00:43, 21 June 2012 (BST)
