Talk:RelatedTerms
(partly) superfluous
Seeing this template used like here Tag:man_made=monitoring_station with just "monitoring" and "station" mut on it it looks quite superfluous. Both words already appear at the page.
Besides: is it necessary to show the synonyms at the page? Imo it would be sufficient to have them in the source code, for the search will "see" them there too, I guess. -- malenki 17:14, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
PS: e.g. hide the terms could be hid using JavaScript -- malenki 17:21, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- I usually find it fairly natural to weave in a mention of lots of related terms into the textual description of the tag itself, for example saying "also known as x" or "Other the names for this are x". (did this recently for Tag:shop=variety_store for example). In general there's lots of work needed to flesh out the description of tags. This is the best way to provide more search matches, but this is harder work, and requires good english writing skills. I guess it's easier to just list related words at the end of the description. The use of wiki templates is a bit superfluous, and yes, putting related terms which are already mentioned in the text (and even the page title!) is entirely pointless as far as I can see. Maybe there's some machine readability reason for it -- Harry Wood 19:03, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
Usage of this template outside OSM tag documentation
Right now you can find this template at bottom of following pages: State Of The Map Europe 2014 and Live Viewer. I have opinion that Related Terms template can be only used at tag description pages or tag templates. Shall we break (disable) this template at non tag pages? Xxzme (talk) 14:32, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
Questions
- Is this project in use?
- What software is using it?
- If it's just a list of search terms, then it's meta data & should not be visible on the page. It just creates confusion. Example: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:railway%3Dstop. Termination is not a used tag.
