Tags for an actual sandbox?
If I want to add an actual sandbox on the map, how do I do that? -abbedabb (talk) 21:43, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
- playground=sandpit. (I know it's a late answer, but I ended up here looking for the same thing, and I suspect it might happen to others as well.) //Essin (talk) 22:49, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
- Fair point. I've linked this tag on the actual page too.
- The Sandbox content tends to get overriden by test edits from people though, so... well I guess people should reset it to this state every now and then

Create a sandbox to play around with categories
It would be useful to be able to create, manipulate, translate etc. categories in the sandbox as well. Is this something that can be done? --Pa 1919 (talk) 12:38, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

. – What do you mean by "create, manipulate, translate etc. categories in the sandbox", or what do you want to test? Can you give an example? --Chris2map (talk) 20:11, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the signature - I meant it would be useful to be able to create categories in a sandbox to be able to manipulate categories in the same way the sandbox lets us manipulate pages (without consequences on the main wiki pages). For example creating the translated versions of a category to practice manipulating templates.
- This idea comes from another problem: I am actually trying to understand how the redirecting of translated categories work, and why does wanted pages displays pages that are only meant to redirect to the actual translated category. Those pages are not actually wanted right?--Pa 1919 (talk) 08:12, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
- To the last point: Yes, those redirecting category pages aren't wanted by us human users. The programmers of MediaWiki gave that function the name Special:WantedPages. They only exist to make the links to other languages possible. Those language links must have the identical page name like the English category page plus the language namespace. The category name itself mustn't be translated. Several languages also want to translate the category name that is possible by redirect only. So we technically need ("want") those redirecting pages. --Chris2map (talk) 17:15, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
- I understand those redirecting categories are necessary. However, the wanted pages displays those redirecting categories AND legitimate pages that would be interesting to human users. For example: highway=unpaved does not exist and human-useful pages link to this page. That makes wanted pages a useful tool to find most common red links.
- Also there seems to be a page dedicated to listing the Category:Soft-redirected categories no longer containing pages.
- So, does wanted pages really want to display machine-useful categories? and not just only human useful empty pages. --Pa 1919 (talk) 13:01, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- Special:WantedPages is a built-in feature of the MediaWiki software that we cannot adjust (as far as I know). Category:Soft-redirected categories no longer containing pages was manually created by a wiki user and as is filled by a wiki template we are able to adjust. Two different things. --Chris2map (talk) 14:25, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
