Talk:Southwest Surrey Mapping Party
As I haven't been to any mapping parties yet, could someone add some info to the page on what to bring? Is a laptop useful - if so is there anywhere secure to keep it while cycling off road? Or do people do the editing when they go home? I assume where people will be meeting will be discussed closer to the time? Thanks, -- Daveemtb 12:24, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Laptops and GPS cables are useful for downloading tracks to get an idea of the progress made in the day but are not normally required to do mapping. I do the database changes in the days after the event. What I bring: GPS, GPS cables, camera (for photo mapping), spare batteries, water, push bike and a few print outs of current OSM progress (to avoid duplicating effort) and the NPE map so I don't get lost while mapping. A cake diagram needs to be created to allocate areas to people. I will talk to Nick about this. --TimSC 12:56, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- My GPS has started playing up, it keeps switching off, which is useless for mountain biking :( Will there be any spare ones available for use on the day? Daveemtb 06:58, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
I have no experience of countryside mapping. How would someone go about finding the footpaths to map in the first place? Is it just a matter of being assigned an area and mapping everything that you can find? --Thomas Wood 13:10, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- There's nothing to stop you having a printed, copyrighted map about your person and using that as a guideline as to where you'll find footpaths -- as long as you're collecting GPS traces by walking, you're not deriving anything from the map. You'll just have to keep your eyes open for any paths that aren't marked on the map. Jono 13:04, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
- Nothing, other than the wrath of other OSMers :) --Thomas Wood 17:18, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
