Fee

If used on a viewpoint, isn't that confusing: what is the fee for, the viewpoint, the binoculars?--Hungerburg (talk) 22:45, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

On the binoculars - a view is normally free to see ;) In the case that accessing a platform is paid, then the fee can go on the platform. If the situation to map is really confusing, one can make separate points for binoculars and the viewpoint.Pietervdvn (talk) 22:53, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

Nah, if you want the tag to succeed, do not recommend bad practice. This is confusing. Do not rely on third objects to carry relevant information. Tourism viewpoint is established, you cannot just arbitrarily slap fees onto that. It does not belong to "Tags to use in combination."--Hungerburg (talk) 23:22, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
Well, you have a point there. I'm gonna remove it, so that the viewpoint-mention is only at the 'see also'-section Pietervdvn (talk) 11:01, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. Actually, I am here, because I like these glasses. I mapped two yesterday. But thinking some more, maybe the tag could be more successful if instead a subtag on tourism viewpoint, don't you think? There won't ever be a viewer where there is no viewpoint? "magnifier/viewer/scope/binoculars=free/paid/yes" or some such… I personally liked magnifier best. Perhaps it is not too late to change that.
Pros of this approach: the data gets selected without any change in the consumer, if it already selects viewpoint, e.g. for rendering; also, it is nice on the user, which may ask: Hey there is a viewpoint, does it have a magnifier?--Hungerburg (talk) 20:21, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
I like the idea, but it falls apart if there are two or more binoculars on a single panoramic location. Furhtermore, the binoculars might also be installed in a bird shelter, where the view is sometimes only a few meters and not that spectacular. Pietervdvn (talk) 23:02, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Telescopes

There is no separate tag for telescopes. They are functionally the same thing so I would suggest using this tag. Perhaps with apertures=1 TimRed (talk) 09:46, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

Yes there is? man_made=telescope .

man_made=telescope are telescopes to see the stars, whereas binoculars are mostly meant for tourists to enjoy the view. Maybe this tags could better be renamed to 'tower_viewer' --Pietervdvn (talk) 14:35, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Direction

Mention a direction= tag, (with a range: 30-45 allowed, unless fixed and unmovable.) Jidanni (talk) 15:58, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

sure, go on Pietervdvn (talk) 16:19, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

Monocular

Sometime these objects have just one ocular for one eye only. Somehow not appropriate to tag as binoculars. Any suggestion? Valeriobozz (talk) 11:37, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

It's indeed funny https://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photo-binoculars-airport-visitors-terrace-views-over-runway-international-plane-image98306517
man_made=telescope mentioned above is used and commonly refers to astronomy, but maybe there are some nautical telescopes. Spotting scopes could be referred to as telescopes, for watching animals (some special parks may have them for this purpose) or aircrafts (at airports).
To avoid further bloating amenity=* , it can at least be moved to man_made=binoculars , and thus man_made=monocular . No need for an amenity=* when there is already tourism=viewpoint .
