Retail vehicle inspection stations

I think this article should clarify that a vehicle inspection station is not necessarily run by the government. For example, in California, the state government mandates emissions testing ("smog checks") but does not operate any smog check stations itself. Instead, private companies operate retail "test-only stations" or car repair facilities that also offer smog checks; these facilities participate in either of two statewide programs. Often, the business signposts only the smog check program's logo and not its own business name. In California#Miscellaneous, I've added a passage recommending amenity=vehicle_inspection for a test-only station and also service:vehicle:smog_check=yes for repair and test-only stations alike. I think this approach makes sense in California because it is useful to distinguish between test-only and car repair facilities. – Minh Nguyễn ^💬 06:08, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Note that vehicle inspection is much more than California smog tests. In much of Europe, it's a complete test of road legality covering everything from brakes and lights to emissions, and there are large companies owning hundreds of test facilities all over the union . Heavy vehicles inspection
