Talk:Tag:barrier=border control

Should this tag be on the single point where the road crosses the border to represent the border as a whole or at the immigration and customs on each side of the border? —Preceding unsigned comment added by RocketMan (talk • contribs)

In my opinion we should tag the actual barrier, that is those places where the border/customs police might stop you to check passport or whatever. The barrier=border_control is thus sometimes only few meters from the border, but often several kilometers away. Nillerdk (talk) 11:24, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Local / international

I wonder is there is any tags to define border controls as suited only for locals or international for everyone? Oo-o-oo (talk) 11:54, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

It is a very complicated matter. What means "local" (living up to 10 km from border? being from this country but not another country?)? If you have knowledge, you could think about adding it with a tag like border_control:all_nationalities=yes/no Avena701 (talk) 16:28, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Some controls pass only citizens of countries on border of which this border control stands. Some pass everyone from everywhere. This info is particularly important when you plan your travel because in local border control point you either can't enter or leave country. There is like around 10 places between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan where Kazakhstan and Kyrgyz people can cross the border but there is only 4 places where everyone can cross.Oo-o-oo (talk) 08:48, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

So, this problem was never solved? There are at least two ([1] [2]) cases, where such conditional restriction (only for locals) is needed to close the notes. Aurimas (talk) 20:47, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Meaning of "local"

There can be several meaning when it come to "only local people can use the border".

• Some border crossing can only be used by citizens of countries on two sides (See discussions above)
• Some border crossing can only be used by citizens of the province or prefectures or town or village on two sides (Like some ferry crossing between Mainland China and Taiwan? Were any of them still like this?)
• Some border crossing can be restricted in a way so that only specific farmers or workers who work in the area or have farmland across the territory can cross the border. (Example being Cross Border Industrial Area crossing)

Embassies / United Nations buildings or similar

Right now there is no defined way on how to differentiate between real country borders or insignificant border controls such as at embassies but they get tagged as barrier=border_control too. It's likely best to use embassy tag on those in addition? Like embassy=yes or has someone a better solution?-- Officially of course they are border controls as embassies belong to the country they represent - but you don't officially enter that country by entering the embassy. Even more complicated for the 3 UN headquarters which are international ground. Extremecarver (talk) 14:51, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
