rental or owned

Here in N. America "Apartment" is generally used for rental units, while "condo" (or condominium) is usually used for a unit that is owned. The main page doesn't specify if this tag can be used on either rented or resident owned units, but by the equivalence with the British term "flat" I'd assume it can be used for either. Could someone more knowledgeable/experienced than me make this explicit? --Keithonearth (talk) 23:44, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

I've tried to address this in the main page text. Broadly speaking we dont discriminate, at least by building type (and correctly for places in Europe because a) many people rent in all income brackets, b) because many apartment developments may be mixed owner-occupier/social housing and c) because in Britain some social housing has been sold to owner occupiers, again resulting in mixed developments. Also from an OSM perspective determining the ownership status of a block is not straightforward in a ground survey, so we ought to have a tag which is neutral. I'm sure there are suitable tags to show the predominant ownership category of an apartment block. SK53 (talk) 18:23, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Original use

The article clearly states that we should tag the apartment building by its original use, if converted. However, this seems to present some problems. For example, tagging a converted hospital or school building, renders these building as hospitals or schools (I know we shouldn't map for the renderer but even OSM web does this). Additionally, the wiki pages for those buildings suggest that these tags should only be used for active buildings of that type. What is the correct protocol in this instance? How about building=yes, building:use=apartment, and old_building:use=school?

Additionally, I recommend for, e.g. converted churches, changing the default tags such as amenity=place_of_worship to old_amenity=place_of_worship etc. Otherwise, again, this will show as an active church on OSM. Perhaps this should be added to the examples provided?

At the train station there was a similar case see Present use. In the case of a church that now has a different use, I would tag building=church without amenity=place_of_worship. In the case of a train station, it is something else, because building=train station is already rendered differently.--geozeisig (talk) 08:59, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Can you link the map rendering building=hospital as hospitals? I except some misinterpretation here Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 09:25, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Sounds like a tagging mistake. There is also tourism=apartment but it is unlikely to be tagged as building, I think Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 16:52, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
