Building ?

Transformer for distributing

Which building-tag is to use, if the transformer has the same funtions like a tower, but the building is often a smaller concrete building with only one platform, because all the lines are coming from earth instead of masts? --thx in advance K@rl (talk) 12:50, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

I would say just building=yes or building=industrial. It is certainly not a transformer tower. That tag should only be used on tall buildings constructed to be a terminal for an overhead power line. For the building on your picture you should also add power=substation and substation=minor_distribution. --opani (talk) 14:36, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
yes but which kind of building - there is a builing with flat roof and walls contrarely to a another kind with two masts and twice so high - it's also not a tower - unfortunately I haven't a photo at this moment. (but not a pole transformer) like in US K@rl (talk) 21:23, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
Aslo the description and connect to an overhead power line. was in earliert time valid, but is often overruled through earth lines in the neigbourhood. --K@rl (talk) 07:44, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
For this you can use building=service. Chrabros (talk) 08:02, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Redundant?

This tag seems quite redundant. Electric substation buildings come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and this tag seems to only apply to a limited subset of buildings combining the tags building=service + power=substation + building:levels=2 or more (and apparently height should be greater than either length or width). There's also a high probability of this tag being applied to substation buildings which are clearly not towers (this ambiguity makes it difficult to properly check how many of the buildings tagged this way are not towers and should not use this tag). I feel like it would be the best solution to deprecate this tag and replace it with the regular building=service instead. Creating a new tag that would cover any power substation buildings irrespective of their shape or size seems also like an option but power substations are not that distinct in architecture from say district heating substations (I even know examples of both being combined in the same building in my hometown) or minor pumping stations. --VileGecko (talk) 15:04, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
