Impassable
I added a short note to the first line clarifying that a road under construction is impassable by the traffic it was intended for. I did this because I notice people marking roads undergoing construction but still usable as highway=construction. Since this impacts both the visual map and more importantly routing software, I thought this an important clarification. --Martijn van Exel (talk) 16:01, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
Planned constructions
There is currently no way to register a planned instruction. There is 'opening_date' but no 'closing_date'. It would be nice to have that (or a similar) tag to plan ahead.--Discobiker (talk) 12:32, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- What do you want to map? There is a tag for planned road construction: highway=proposed. maro21 23:26, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- There is a planned construction here where they announced that a portion of highway will be closed during a certain date span. I would like to be able to set a closing_date in advance, so it becomes automatically active at the particular date. I am aware that at some point these tags have to removed again, since they are obsolete. --Discobiker (talk) 09:30, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Nothing will happen automatically even if you add this tag. On OSM we don't map future and temporary events. maro21 17:06, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Well, that is not exactly true. Routing based on OSM does take similar things into account - for example there is a bridge here that is only open during certain months of the year and the rest of the (due to proper maintained opening times in OSM) the routing automatically takes it into account and finds another way. Why not use closing_date/opening_date in a similar manner.--Discobiker (talk) 00:20, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- How is this bridge tagged? maro21 18:26, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

Temporary
I propose that the advice to not tag closures less than 6 to 9 months is very much out of data with respect to current data practices. While people use OSM data offline all the time, in places with good network infrastructure it is rare to almost unheard of to not update maps for 9 months, at least for someone who wants updated maps. The phone mapping programs I know of have update cycles of 1 month (OsmAnd) and variable but almost always under 2 months (Organic Maps). At this point, in areas where there is wifi/cell, I view having maps that are more than a month or so out of date as a choice, and one that we shouldn't cater to at the expense of those who are updated.
There's another issue that the advice not to edit misses. If the road is closed and the map says it is usable, people will be routed to use it and then have to backtrack. If it's usable and the map says it isn't, it will just be avoided, and that is likely to be a lesser cost.
I'll edit the page in 30 days on the basis that this text is old and represents practices from an earlier time, when being up to date was less common and harder. I'll include a caveat that the time length will vary based on the location, being related to how local users have the ability to get updates. --Greg Troxel 13:52, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
- I agree and support. maro21 23:49, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
- With all in favor here and tagging list, I have made the edit. Thanks all for the discussion. --Greg Troxel 12:11, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
