Surface=paved implied?

Could a highway=primary imply surface=paved? I'm guessing there are countries where it isn't so, so please mention here if you know a country where significant portion of primary roads aren't paved. Alv 09:52, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

There are federal roads in Amazonia in Brazil which are unpaved or disintegrated over the years into dirt roads, for example BR-319 or BR-230 Rodovia Transamazônica. Maybe we should have an icon for unpaved roads (sand, gravel, dirt, grass)? In this case it could be red road but with dashed edges. I think it's not used in Mapnik.

Surface=paved NOT implied

This road is tagged highway=primary. It's a key route between South Africa and Lesotho:

Sani Pass, South Africa / Lesotho border area

In the map, it's way Sani Pass. There wasn't a good way to add it to the page, but this could be part of a gallery of examples.

"It's a key route between South Africa and Lesotho" - it sounds like highway=trunk based on that info (are they using trunks for expressways in that region?) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:02, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
There are actual motorways in South Africa. --ZeLonewolf (talk) 14:57, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

oneway=yes ?

@Duja: I see you've removed section about oneway=yes with comment that you've "never seen a one-way primary road", however taginfo claims that there are over 1.6 millions of such combinations, and I'm not sure that all of them are tagging mistakes. So would you consider restoring that section, or giving more rationale? Thanks --mnalis (talk) 09:11, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

mnalis: But in the same series of edits I added a clarification under #Special situations, "Roads with dual carriageways are mapped with two parallel sets of ways tagged oneway=yes, one for each traffic direction". I didn't delve deep into the taginfo output, but I'm ready to bet that ~100% of so tagged roads fall under this category. Duja (talk) 11:49, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
