Great tag

This is exacly the thing I was looking all my life for! My OSM life! :-)

For me educational means schools, vocational schools, universities, colleges, kindergarden, etc.

taginfo interim status 30 March 2015

landuse=...

  • institutional=187
  • civic_admin=11
  • education=395
  • educational=14
(FoeNyx (talk)) And as of mid october 2020, landuse =
  • institutional (603) INSTITUTIONAL (37) Institutional (15)
  • civic_admin (331), civic (257), civic_services (16)
  • education (671), educational (14)

landuse=education(al)

I think to have a separate tag for this is a rather good idea! Is education(al) a proper term for schools, vocational schools, universities, colleges, kindergarden, etc. ???

Difference between this and landuse=commercial

I see this was moved to the main space and labeled as de facto by the person who did the move. Which is clearly wrong because there's obviously landuse=commercial for a lot of the things this is being recommended for. So, I'd love to know the difference between them. Especially since things like NGOs and social facilities aren't institutions. --Adamant1 (talk) 03:19, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Problematic wording

I think the term "institution" is problematic. Since it's way to general, could apply to anything, and the things tag is recommended for aren't even institutions. For instance social facilities. Whereas depending on the location banks and hospitals would both be considered institutions, but it would be wrong to tag them with landuse=institutional. There's already landuse=commercial for banks and whatever tag for hospital grounds anyway. So, IMO this tag should be depreciated for the ones that are much clearer and already being used. --Adamant1 (talk) 03:24, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

While I do not fail to see the ambiguity of using "institutional" for private banks, hospitals and schools, the tag is nonetheless filling a gap left by much clearer and already being used tags, especially when talking about "institutional" land of public character. For example, the land around public buildings like a parliament, a city hall, a courthouse, a city or local gov archives building, a local branch of the state central bank, or land around social outreach amenities operated on public funds, or multi-purpose land owned by the city. In those cases I do not think they do belong under "commercial/retail" nor "educational", "industrial", "residential"... In fact in those cases "institutional" is currently the first somehow matching value (maybe precisely because kind of generic enough) in the listing of taginfo landuse values, when sorted by decreasing usage. Maybe landuse=civic_admin, which is proposed to be merged with "institutional", is less ambiguous and would match most of previous cases, but sadly for now it is even less used. --FoeNyx (talk) 16:00, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

Poorly defined

The current definition says that this tag is for "areas of land used for institutional purposes" and then links to the Wikipedia disambiguation page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institution_(disambiguation) which says "Institutions are social constructs, both cultural and organizational. Institution or institutions may also refer to: Formal organizations, The buildings maintained by such organizations, particularly: Mental asylums, Jails; Institutions in computer science." - this suggests that jails, nursing homes, mental hospitals, and NGOs could all be tagged this way.

The original proposal was even broader, including: "educational, medical institutions, public facilities such as museums, libraries, community centres, courthouses, government offices, or other similar uses". This is not very clear. Is a commercial amenity=pharmacy part of this landuse, since it might be considered "medical" facility? Why should schools, hospitals, and government offices be considered the same sort of landuse? While in some countries these are all operated by the government, in others most school and hospitals are private, commercial operations. I believe this landuse category is too broad and indefinite to be consistently used by mappers. --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:30, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Better alternatives

This, and landuse=education, could be for a shared site of multiple such features without separately defined outlines. Cf complexes mentioned in Talk:Proposed_features/Civic_admin#landuse.3Dcivic. Idea of a landuse=prison was similarly raised in Talk:Tag:amenity=prison#Area?. ---- Kovposch (talk) 09:21, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
