Consider utility=* for pumping stations

Unfortunately, pumping stations weren't covered by Proposed_features/Utility_facilities. pumping_station=* sounds like a duplicate of utility=*.
It seems consistent to use utility=* on pumping stations and substance=* with contained man_made=pumps. It can let pumping_station=* available for more pumping specific tagging.
Let's discuss about that here Fanfouer (talk) 18:45, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. We seem to be converging on utility=* for the network the infrastructure relates to (e.g. drinking water network, sewage network, electricity network, gas network) and substance=* for the liquid stored in a pipeline or tank. Aharvey (talk) 03:04, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
Actually I just checked out the examples https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:man_made=pumping_station#Examples and changed my mind. Pumped hydro or pumped storage hydropower exists, so you could have a pumping_station pumping a water, but for the electricity network. In this case I agree it should be utility=power since it's part of the electricity network, then perhaps we should directly use substance=* here to specify the exact kind of liquid being pumped. No problem to use substance=* if required. The point is to discourage pumping_station=* in favour of utility=*. Fanfouer (talk) 10:42, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
Makes sense. So use utility=* for what infrastructure network the pumping station is part of, then substance=* for the specific substance being bumped. This removes the ambiguity with pumping_station=* and keeps the tags more consistent. It's unclear who originally added the pumping_station=* tag here since the page was translated from another German page? What do we need to do to mark pumping_station=* as deprecated and document it as such? Aharvey (talk) 00:02, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
