building=tomb

Hello. Is this supposed to be the same as building=tomb? It is also used for tombs without historical value (see the answer to this OSM Help question) and has been used 723 times on OSM. Should one of those tags be discouraged or can they co-exist? - Privatemajory (talk) 17:27, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Not every tomb is building, but some are, so building=tomb and man_made=tomb may coexist. Something B (talk) 11:01, 2 March 2025 (UTC)

Historic=tomb

When would historic=tomb not apply? Any tomb is historic. —Dieterdreist (talk) 21:31, 1 March 2025 (UTC)

That argument doesn't make sense. Eg we don't use historic=cemetery for all landuse=cemetery ?

The historic=cemetery tag is not something I am aware of, it is not widely used and seems the work of an individual contributor. The definition is not clear either. IMHO any attempt to read “historic significance” into the historic tag is ignoring how the key is actually used, and will only create trouble when it is used as an argument to remove historic tags from objects because they are not deemed sufficiently significant.
Then, I agree that landuse=cemetery is a problematic tag on its own, because it uses landuse for a feature. —Dieterdreist (talk) 09:56, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
I do prefer historic=yes , and agree landuse=cemetery is being used as a feature https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/tag-cemetery-grave/126101/7
But this wasn't your question…

Yes, my stance was that the threshold for "historical value" is very low, probably it shouldn't even be defined like this, note that "significance" is not a requirement that was even there until some time ago. To a historian, everything can have "historical value", depending on the questions they are trying to answer. --Dieterdreist (talk) 09:34, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
