As sewage flows through the network, it may be treated at different points. For example it may enter the system as "raw sewage" then go through primary, secondary, etc treatments. Perhaps sewage:treatment=raw/primary/secondary Aharvey.
- "raw" indicates raw sewage without any treatment being done
- "primary" treatment typically removes large solids using physical separation processes including screening, grit removal, sedimentation.
- "secondary" treatment typically uses bacteria to break down nutrients
- "tertiary" treatment typically applies further filters to the water and disinfects it with chlorine or ultraviolet light (UV) to kill any remaining microorganisms.
