Duplicate of utility=telecom
I believe television is a part of telecommunications, and in particular, cable TV infrastructure is also used for internet and phone service now. This tag has only been used one time. Can we recommend using utility=telecom instead? --Jeisenbe (talk) 11:22, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
- We actually find both sort of cable tv networks : digital and analogic. Digital may have been upgraded to provide internet services with television as well (however not mandatory) but analogic still provide television only. I've updated the page to give better indication about the difference Fanfouer (talk) 15:12, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
- Why not use utility=phone for copper wire phone lines, and utility=fiberoptic for fiber, and so on? Or just use utility=telecom for all of them? --Jeisenbe (talk) 02:04, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- From the start of those two technologies, television was broadcast but telephone remained full (or at least half) duplex media. Until now, television is still unidirectional despite it became digital. That's not properly telecommunications which would hardly exist if they were only broadcast (ok let's call that FM radio). That's a fundamental difference. I'm pretty sure ITU makes this distinction in official documentation (don't have precise references). Utility refers to separate infrastructures in which you'll find more precise (and different sometime simultaneously) substances or medium. Copper, Fibre or coaxial are medium, not utilities. Nowadays, only telecom networks are rolled out, television networks are legacy and refurbished or abandonned. Should we add on this page that utility=telecom is preferable in case of hesitation?
