Talk:WikiProject Belgium/Conventions/Schools
There are quite a few open questions right now:
Should we introduce a school:BE-tagging system?
Should we use school:be=* to indicate the levels or school=*?
Small proposals
Hi, I really like the proposal! A couple of short thoughts:
Instead of having school=lower_secondary or upper_secondary I would propose to simply set school=secondary and then add any combination of lower_secondary=yes, higher_secondary=yes
That way we can distinguish all the cases but still remain somewhat compatible with international convention (you can still filter secondary).
Second: maybe it would be interesting to add a convention to tag the network (free, official).
Third: I think I saw some data published by the Walloon region that lists schools with addresses and other details. Maybe useful to try to find it back and to ask whether that could be released under a free license. DanielMe (talk) 17:21, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi DanielMe,
- The idea is that if someone searches for `school=secondary`, they might expect the found schools to offer all grades; hence the reason I broke them apart. `school=secondary` is thus merely a shorthand for `school=lower_secondary;middle_secondary;upper_secondary`.
An argument can be made for `<schoollevel>=yes`, but then we should perhaps apply this for primary and kindergarten too.
- The network-tag might be really interesting, but currently I do not have the time and energy to formalize this as well, so I can only encourage you to do this. Also: be very careful and exact in the definition, because (at least in Flanders) there are some ways to classify schools: one is by where the money comes from (de inrichtende macht, such as Vrij onderwijs vs stedelijk onderwijs vs gemeeschapsonderwijs), one is the 'chapter' (koepel) the are with and which is the closest to a 'network'.I have found in the official datasets: Federatie Steinerscholen, "Federatie van Onafhankelijke, Pluralistische, Emancipatorische Methodescholen", GO! onderwijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, Katholiek Onderwijs Vlaanderen, Onderwijssecretariaat Steden en Gemeenten Vlaamse Gemeen- schap (OVSG), Provinciaal Onderwijs Vlaanderen, Raad van Inrichtende Machten van het Protestants- Christelijk Onderwijs and Vlaams Onderwijs Overleg Platform.
Of course, they are related to the 'inrichtende macht', but don't match entirely.
At last, the 'method' (e.g. freineit, montesori, steiner, CLIL,...) or 'orientation' (ASO, TSO, BSO) could be interpreted by some as 'network' too - especially since e.g. Freineitscholen have networking moments...
- I added a section on resources, including flemish and Walloon links. I did parse the Flemish data already, will publish this dataset sometime soon.

Schools operating on the same grounds on different times of the day
I am interested to find a proper way to tag the following situation:
- During the day, this is a normal school for children, tagged as an area including all the buildings and the schoolyard.
- In the evening, the place is used as a music/dance academy (under a different name/operator/contact details) and/or a school for adults ("sociale promotie/tweedekansonderwijs"). In my area, I know such a school, which hosts both a music academy and a school for adults in the evening.
Looking for a scheme that will avoid "amenity=school inside amenity=school" errors, or dual amenity=*;* tags. Bxl-forever (talk) 09:08, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
- This is indeed quite common. First of all, as they are a totally different organization who just happen to (time)share the same building, they should get at least their own node. If these are topical school, they'll probably receive amenity=music_school, amenity=dancing_school... However, the current tagging scheme will probably indeed result in having school within school-entries. I don't see a better solution for this right away... Linear vs modular courses
Some schools do offer a 'linear course', others have 'modular courses' (or both).
