Is there "front"?
The wiki page says "Here you can also set which lens is to the front (icon with two arrows in a circle). Make sure it is correct, then switch back to 360.". But which setting is which? The manual at https://gopro.com/content/dam/help/max/manuals/MAX_UM_ENG_REVB.pdf says "you can tap (two arrow icon) to choose which lens view will be shown on the touch screen", which seems to imply there isn't really "front".
https://community.gopro.com/s/question/0D53b00008BtNA0CAN/gopro-max-360-still-exif-gpsimgdirection?language=en_US talks about the camera having magnetometer, but not actually recording this information - although it was 4 years ago and there could have been firmware fixes since then.
And then https://gethypoxic.com/blogs/technical/gopro-max-teardown says "E-Compass 3-axis digital geomagnetic sensor. Located on GPS PCB. Used for horizon leveling".
Is direction/heading recorded for these images at all? --Richlv (talk) 09:46, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- There is a front and back in the 360 images, in the sense that the "front" is center in the resulting JPG file (which is just a normal JPG file, software needs to decide to treat it as a 360 with some extra queue - on mapillary that is simply based on the ratio of width by height). IIRC, Mapillary uses the next image to orient the previous one; and it makes the wrong decision if the back camera is central in the JPG. It seems easier to just have a convention like this as well, for further processing of the images in any form.
