SVG Thumbnailer has problem with umlaut in filename?

The file Image:White_1_in_white_circle_with_Gü_above.svg White 1 in white circle with Gü above.svg does not show up in the wiki. It works fine for other versions without umlaut in filename like for example Image:White_V_in_white_circle_with_G_above.svg White V in white circle with G above.svg -- LosHawlos 18:42, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

I've now uploaded using a different filename without umlaut White 1 in white circle with Guuml above.svg -- LosHawlos 17:57, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Fixed -- firefishy 21:59, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Resolved: it works now Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:26, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

Templates

Hi,

Where can I get some help with creating a template on this wiki? I imported {{Start date}} from Wikipedia, including two sub-templates, but it's not working. What am I missing? Pigsonthewing 22:53, 15 August 2010 (BST)

The usual problem with trying to copy a template from wikipedia, is that almost all their templates are constructed as a tangled mess of dependencies on other templates, forming a kind of cool, but faintly ridiculous, sort of modular programming language in the wiki text. Copying over lots of this into our wiki... it feels like a rabbit hole we might not want to go down. What's our strategy for syncing with bug fixes/changes over time? It gets really messy. Might a problem some wikimedian's can advise on (how do Templates get shared across wikimedia sister projects? I'm not sure)
It might not be a big deal in the case of {{Start date}}. I see that template makes a lot of use of {{padleft which we're missing (Template:Padleft is a red link here at time of writing) . So that would be a starting point to fix, and might be the only bit we're missing

Wrong reference or typo ???

Whilst translating into Dutch I came across this sentence:

" You should probably not use any map image from Wikimedia, even where they are pronounced cc-by-sa on Wikipedia, because this community applies more strict criteria regarding derivative works."

I was confused by the mentioning of Wikimedia, since elsewhere is mentioned Wikimedia Commons.

I wonder if there is a typo there and if originally was meant to write: Wikipedia

Well I think it means "wikimedia commons" but this is pretty much one and the same thing when it comes to images and copyrights (wikipedia hosts most of its images at wikimedia commons). Saying just "wikimedia" is a reasonable shortcut too. In fact it's technically more accurate, since the thing we're talking about here applies to wikimedia commons and any/all of the wikimedia sister projects. They all treat geodata copyrights less strictly than us.
Note that this is only talking about map images. We have stricter rules about map image copyrights, so presenting map images, brought in from commons, can cause some confusion. Other images... no problem.

Thanks Harry,
clear to me now and I'll leave it as is :-).

SVG images and files from Wikimedia Commons causing slow page load

The use of SVG images and Wikimedia Commons files is on the rise these days. Regarding this, I noticed slow loading of pages with lots of images. E.g. Tag:hazard=animal_crossing or DE:Key:destination:symbol. – Is this due to SVG rendering or due to location of the files at Commons?
I tried to find some background info about SVG. Many of the SVG files don't seem to have optimized code. But if code optimization would make a difference, I don't know (and it would mean to change images on Commons). – Which is the bigger brake, SVG or the external embedding? Does anyone know more about it and have an idea, how to speed up such pages? --Chris2map (talk) 08:36, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

As far as I know it is not caused specifically by SVG images from Commons, and simply having many images on page is enough to cause problems. But I may be mistaken - likely one of ways to test it is preparing pages with massive amount of images of various types (SVG vs jpg/png + local vs Commons) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 09:55, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

using images in wiki-pages

How can I use images (e.g. simple diagrams) in wiki pages? When editing an trying "insert" --> "images and media" I get a message "You don't have permission to upload this file.", even before I select any file. Cut and paste of an image gives the same result. --Quärtz (talk) 13:30, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi! Please sign your posts by typing --~~~~ at the end, so others will know whom they answer. - Did you try the upload link from main menu to the left: Special:Upload ? --Chris2map (talk) 19:32, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
Likely you may upload it to https://commons.wikimedia.org/ Or you can wait and make few more edits (there is some lower limit of about 10 edits and 14 days old account) if it is a rare cases of file uploadable here and not to Commons. @Quärtz: Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 06:16, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

I've just added a section Wiki Help#Upload (New user restrictions) about this -- Harry Wood (talk) 10:15, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

Translating template

Doing the Danish translation of Beginners Guide 1.3 I can't seem to figure out how to get a translated template with the list of desktop and mobile editors. In the source it simply says {{:editors}} and I assume it is somehow synced to Editors. I have made a Danish translation of that page and then tried using {{Da:editors}} but that doesn't work. Any help to solve this will be greatly appreciated. --Fugit Hora (talk) 07:20, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

Replace {{:editors}} with {{:Da:Editing}}. --Chris2map (talk) 15:25, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. That did it. --Fugit Hora (talk) 15:30, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

British English language problem in View History

My langauge for the wiki is set to "British English". When I go to a View History page I see some of the click options in a different language. For example, I should see "Undo | Thank", but I see "cin gbere | lethank"

A search suggests this my be an issue linked to the underlying language "model" (link to wikipedia discussion). It appears to be fixed but now needs a resync? Can anyone fix this? - JassKurn (talk) 17:06, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
