Information About the Project
What is the problem that you are working to address in your community?
(In this section please describe in detail the challenge that your project addresses. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
Poor sanitary and hygienic conditions have been identified as one of the major problems affecting city dwellers. Part of the problem emanates from poor planning, leading to inadequate provision of public toilets that makes it difficult for individuals to attain a sustainable and healthy life. This study aimed to identify the distribution of public toilets within Dar es Salaam CBD using geospatial techniques. Both qualitative and quantitative approach was used to collect and analyze data. Qualitative aspect of the research involved assessing the demand, accessibility, and the hyenic status of public toilets. A survey of 200 people in twelve selected public spaces within Dar es Salaam CBD was done. The quantitative part of the study used ArcGIS software and GIS apparatus to determine whether public toilets are spatially distributed within Dar es Salaam CBD.
Many study findings revealed that that the available toilets were not enough to serve the large number of users in need. Moreover, poor sanitary conditions made people, especially women to use other places other than public toilets. Analysis derived from the use of geospatial tools also showed that the public toilets were not spatially distributed, meaning that they were not planned to adequately cater for the high demand. Therefore, the unproportionate distribution of the toilets calls for a need to develop a spatial toilet strategy in Dar es Salaam, to replace the current ineffective and fragmented solutions. As a long-term strategy, the study suggests that the government should adopt the findings from this study into its decision-making tool to construct public toilets facilities in strategic locations.
What motivates you to work on this issue?
(what is the reason that triggered, inspired you to work on this issue, we recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
According to the 2012 population census, the city of Dar Es Salaam has a population of approximately 4.35 million residents (TNBS, 2013). Available data from the population census indicates that a high percentage of city dwellers have access to household toilets. However, most people do not spend the whole day at home hence resort to the use of public toilets. The general problem is that the available public toilets are considerably few and cannot adequately serve the hundreds of thousands of city residents leading to poor sanitation. Pastore (2015) noted that the provision of public toilets at public places in the city of Dar es salaam has not received sufficient attention from the municipal council. The specific problem is that in addition to the inadequate toilet facilities, the passive and uncommitted leaders involved in the planning of public spaces in Dar Es Salaam CBD have contributed significantly to the poor conditions of public toilets. Kanuti and Alanaga (2019) reported that the government and Municipal authorities have to make the necessary investments in environmental health interventions which include public toilets, or they risk the consequences of neglect which include economic loss, as well as sufferings, diseases and death of their own people.

Techno Environment in environment and GIS company we have office were we coordinate all of our activities, Project will buy data collection tools /Tablets which will be stored in secured Techno environment office, After data collection project techno environment will continue to work with selected 10 wards of ilala CBD time to time since we also surpport capacity building in the area of GIS and waste management.
Project Goal
What are your community defined project goals
(Please explain your project goals. This can include: setting goals such as "we will train X number of new community, "we will register as a legal entity", or "the data will be used by X", and why these goals are important to your community such as "we intend to engage X number of women in mapping activities so that we can empower local women” We recommend your response be a minimum of 150 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
1. Ward level they will be able to see and verify the actual status of public toilets for public health improvements.
2. They will be able to see and identify the correct or Actual demands or needs of public toilet after data collection versus the population they serve.
3. By indirect cost of data collection they will have access to data which will help them to plan the additional.
4. Through data collection training ,they will be to sustain the data collection even in other wards as a sustainable project
5. They will be able to use the data collected for health and hygiene interventions.
6. They will start to use OSM continuously since the inclusion of community level and wards health officers had create the sense of ownership to them
What are your project long-term goals?
(Please describe your project vision. This can include: where you see your project in five years' time, how you want your data to be used, future partnerships you'd like to establish, or how you would like your project to grow (or not!). We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words)
The main objective is to facilitate data collection of all CBD public toilets available in order to update OSM and make individuals/people who are commuting to CBD access toilet easily
1. To conduct a field survey to determine the distribution of public toilets in Dar es Salaam CBD by data collection of all available toilets data.
2. To interview city residents and public toilet attendants to seek their view on the demand, adequacy, and accessibility of public toilets in Dar es Salaam CBD with attribute information.
3. Use geospatial tools, such as GIS to find optimal locations for public toilets development within Dar Es Salaam CBD through Data collection.
List the tools you intend to use during your project and why
(Please describe which tools you plan to use to collect, update, clean, or store you data and why. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
