The Massachusetts Bay Colony creates Yorkshire County in Maine after southern Maine towns acknowledge Massachusetts jurisdiction to territory within the new boundaries it declared on May 26, 1652. The claim conflicts with a 1635 grant of Maine to Ferdinando Gorges.
