Corrections
"you are welcome to OpenStreetmap" sounds wrong to me (in colloquial English it has a negative implication).
"Have fun and good job" also sounds wrong to me, but I'm not sure how to rephrase it. DavidJames 22:11, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Welcoming new users ...to the wiki
One of the problems with welcoming new wiki users, is that some people make contributions to the map or even to the OSM software, for several months without creating a wiki account (And some people dont ever create a wiki account). I welcomed one or two people, but then found myself wondering whether I was being terribly patronising to some hardcore OSM veteran!
Single sign on would solve that problem, if people Creating an Account on OSM, automatically got created in the wiki.
In the meantime another thing to think about is, do we send a welcome email when people create an OSM account? (I've deleted mine if I ever got one). Maybe the text of that email should include some pointers about the copyright issues, and perhaps prompting them to sign up on the wiki too.
I guess there's no real harm in assuming that a user is new to OSM when they are new to the wiki, but something to think about anyway.

I think we should try to contact the tousand of wiki users without a personal page. If we have 10% of this users inserting in the user page their country, we have the opportunity to have more users active and collaborating.
The "people near me" in the WWW page is another userfool tool. Sometimes i have checked the list to discover new users and contacted them via the www interface, asking to registrate to the Wiki too.
The Single Sign On would be a fantastic solution, but i think we have to manage the people right now.
