A directory structure and filenaming convention

For z<=12 tiles

tiles/layer/z/x/y.png

• z: maximum 13 directories
  • x: maximum 4096 directories
    • y: maximum 4096 files

for z>12 tiles

let a = the x coordinate of the zoom-12 tile that this tile is within

let b = the y coordinate of the zoom-12 tile that this tile is within

tiles/layer/at/a/b/z_x_y.png

• a: maximum 4096 directories
  • b: maximum 4096 directories
    • z_x_y: maximum 1380 files

rationale

• Tiles in the same area get stored in similar location on disk (or at least, within same directory)
• each directory corresponds (approximately) to one upload
