Currently working on central Wisconsin - or wherever I go with my GPS.
I'd like to see some cleanup of certain map features.
My ideal tagging scheme
Route
route is the first level of distinction for anything meant for someone to travel along.
route=road/path/water/rail
- road
- Any route primarily intended for use by an automobile.
- path
- Any land route not primarily intended for use by an automobile.
- water
- Any route through water.
- rail
- Any route for a railroad.
Road
road distinguishes various types of roads intended for automobile.
road=motorway/trunk/primary/secondary/tertiary/unclassified/service/driveway/track/4wd
- motorway
- Limited access (motor vehicles only), separated-grade crossings, minimum speeds.
- trunk
- Same, but crossings are not separated-grade.
- primary
- ?? -- UK "A" roads
- secondary
- ?? -- UK "B" roads, US "county highway" and most "state highway"
- tertiary
- ?? -- other "significant" roads.
- unclassified
- ?? -- the most basic road type.
- service
- "special" access roads. Generally intended for access to a specific thing, such as trash collection, parking, campground, cemetery.
- driveway
- roads intended for access to a single residence, or perhaps a small collection of residences.
- track
- ?? -- unpaved, "off-road" roads. Needs to be better-defined. Not all unpaved roads are "track" -- unless a gravel surface is considered paved.
- 4wd
- roads that require a 4-wheel-drive vehicle with high ground clearance to use. 4wd requirement is not absolute, and using these roads at all is risky.
Path
path distinguishes various narrow paths, generally one or two meters wide, unsuitable for automobiles.

- trail
- any path that is unpaved.
- marked
- path may not be visible, or may be hard to see. It is marked only with cairns, blazes, painted symbols, simple distinctively-colored or -shaped symbols.
Rail
rail describes the types of railway
rail=main/tram/light/preserved/disused/narrow/incline/unknown
- main
- main line of the railway
- tram
- generally within a city, basically buses on rails.
- light
- smaller train systems, including subways/"El" trains/"tube"/"underground". May be above or underground
- preserved
- section of rail maintained only or primarily to run historic trains
- disused
- A section of rail which is no longer used, but has not been removed.
- narrow
- A section of rail using a non-standard, narrow gauge (spacing between rails)
- incline
- A section of rail on an incline, requiring special driving mechanisms for the train, including cog or cable drive.
- monorail
- A train using only a single rail.
Network
network ties together a collection of routes that are all part of a single system.
network=arbitrary name(BART, London Underground, National Cycle Network, Green Circle Trail, Yellowstone Trail). Names should be unique if possible. If a route is part of multiple networks, the network names should be separated by semicolons. (or if possible in future, multiple network= values)
Uses
Values: highway/designated/permissive/private/unknown/forbidden
- highway
- public right of way for the given mode of transport. In some places it may be illegal to impede traffic along this route.
- designated
- intended to be used by the given mode of transport.
- permissive
- general permission has been given for use of the route by the given mode of transport.
- private
- permission must be requested before use by the given mode of transport.
- unknown
- self-explanatory
- forbidden
- the given mode of transport is forbidden to use this route.

Notes
I think it is important to have some way of indicating
- what sort of traffic is legally allowed to use a given way
- what sort of traffic is physically capable of using a given way (e.g. bicycles on stairs will have some trouble, motorcars trying to use a way that's only 1m wide will have some trouble, etc.)
- what sort of traffic is intended to use a given way (i.e. while all roads may be legally and physically passable by bicycle (horse, semi/hgv/lorry, etc.) only some of them are intended for use by that.
