Bedford County Virginia Building Import is an import of the Virginia Building Footprints dataset which is a shapefile covering the U.S. state of Virginia. The import is currently (as of 9/9/2024) at the planning stage.

Goals

The goal of this import is to use public domain building footprints published by the Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN) to add building ways to Bedford County, Virginia where data is missing from OSM.

Import Type

This will be a one-time import broken into multiple changesets.

Data Preparation

Data Reduction & Simplification

Footprints already within OSM will be ignored, unless the new footprint is significantly more detailed than the existing OSM footprint. This will be judged manually at time of conflation.

This building footprint is more detailed than the simple rectangle that was previously in OSM. This is an example of what would be imported upon manual review.
This building footprint does not include the multiple connected buildings that have already been mapped, so it would not be imported as-is.

Tagging Plans

All existing tags will be removed from the VGIN dataset, as none are relevant to OpenStreetMap. VGIN has removed all ownership, build date, purpose, etc information from the data, therefore only the geometry is useful.

All ways and multipolygons will be tagged with building=yes. There will be no further tags added at time of import, and existing tagging will be preserved.
