Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Philippines Quick Guide

Introduction to OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a free, editable map of the whole world that is being built by volunteers largely from scratch and released with an open-content license. To learn more about OpenStreetMap, please visit About OpenStreetMap.

Creating an OSM Account

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to create an OSM account. For information on password recovery, changes, and account deletion, please visit OpenStreetMap account.

OSM Tools

There are several editors that can be used to edit and contribute to the OpenStreetMap Project, however for the Philippines, we are going to focus on the use of the iD Editor, RapiD, and JOSM. To view the complete list of editors, please visit Editors.

Remote Mapping Tools

iD Editor

iD is the default editor when using OSM through openstreetmap.org To know more about iD, please visit iD.

Here is a step-by-step guide how to use iD.

RapiD

RapiD is a modified version of the iD Editor. RapiD is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) - assisted tool to review and add roads. In RapiD, AI-mapped roads are highlighted magenta. In order to bring the AI-mapped roads into map features for editing, a mapper can simply select an AI-mapped road and then click “Use This Feature” on the left. From there, the feature is like any other newly-digitized road and can be modified and tagged.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to use RapiD.

For more RapiD editing guidance and tips, please refer to the RapiD Self Service Training Document

JOSM

JOSM (Java OpenStreetMap) Editor is more popular among experienced mappers due to its plugins and stability. It has a feature-rich editor with a slightly complex interface resulting to a relatively steep learning curve. Please visit JOSM to learn more about this editor, and JOSM/Installation for installation procedures.

HOT Tasking Manager

The HOT Tasking Manager (https://tasks.hotosm.org/) is a tool for coordination of volunteers and organizations of groups to map various projects in OpenStreetMap. The purpose of the tool is to divide up a mapping job into smaller tasks that can be completed rapidly. It shows which areas need to be mapped and which areas need the mapping validated. This approach facilitates the distribution of tasks to the various mappers. It also allows control of the progress and the homogeneity of the work done (i.e. elements to cover, specific tags to use, etc.).

The Tasking Manager is a totally separate tool from the main OpenStreetMap project. When you are contributing to OpenStreetMap using the Tasking Manager, you are actually using multiple software tools:

  • OpenStreetMap - A database of geographic information
  • The Tasking Manager - Helps coordinate large numbers of people editing OpenStreetMap data in the same area
  • An OpenStreetMap Editor - A software program that can read and write data into the OpenStreetMap database (usually iD or JOSM)

Here is a step-by-step guide how to use HOT's Tasking Manager.

Course Offerings

There are various courses/trainings being offered by HOT Philippines. If you're interested to receive any of this FREE training, please find us on social media (see below) and we would love to hear from you.

Introductory Mapathons

Teaches new mappers the basics of how to map using OpenStreetMap; generally a fun event without pressure.

Ladderized Courses

Basic Mapping (1 day)

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Description: Teaches in detail how to create base maps of roads and buildings via satellite imagery using OpenStreetMap and iD editor
  • Certification: Upon completion of training AND completing 50 Tasking Manager tasks in Tasking Manager, once validated, will grant participants certification as a HOT PH Base Mapper. This requires mapping outside of training activities

Field Mapping (2 days)

  • Prerequisite: Basic Mapping Certification
  • Description: Teaches field mapping using handheld Android devices so participants can collect data on critical lifeline infrastructures. One day of field mapping is included in the training, but it is recommended additional days be scheduled
  • Certification: Upon completion of training AND one full day of field mapping, once validated, will grant participants certification as a HOT PH Field Mapper

Advanced Mapping and Junior Validator Training (1 day)

  • Prerequisite: Basic Mapping Certification AND at least 100 building tasks and 100 road tasks from the Tasking Manager tasks
  • Description: Teaches how to use JOSM and validate base maps of roads and buildings created via satellite imagery
  • Certification: User elevated to Validator status on HOT Tasking Manager based on subjective review of contributor’s quality and granted certification as a HOT PH Junior Validator

Senior Validator Training (1 day)

  • Prerequisite: Field Mapping Certification AND subjective review of user’s quality
  • Description: Teaches how to validate the work of Field Mappers collecting data on critical lifeline infrastructures
  • Certification: Subjective review of contributor’s quality will grant participant certification as a HOT PH Senior Validator and allow them to validate field mapping activities.

Training of Trainers - ToT (multiple days depending on participants)

  • Prerequisite: All other preceding courses
  • Description: Prepares students to teach the aforementioned courses. Participants will receive classroom training and act as an assistant trainer
  • Certification: Based on Senior Trainer’s judgement on the participant’s teaching ability and technical skills, the participant will be certified as a HOT PH Trainer

Ad Hoc Courses

Quality Assurance Training (2-8 hours depending on tools)

  • Prerequisite: Basic Mapping Certification AND/OR Field Mapping
  • Description: Teaches how to use various tools to check base and/or field data for quality control and assurance. Courses are variable in length depending on the type of quality control users will be performing
  • Certification: None

OpenStreetMap Data Users Training (4-5 hours)

  • Prerequisite: Experience using QGIS
  • Description: For GIS professionals who'd like to learn how to better utilize OSM data in QGIS
  • Certification: None

OpenAerialMaps Training (4-5 hours)

  • Further information available upon request.
