ContourGPS Review

CLEANMAP
As a major limitation of your map, you should add in the wiki that only elements defined in Mapnik style are rendered or are you really showing all data loss in CLEANMAP/BADMAP, including POI's, tags, elements not usually rendered by Mapnik ? --Pieren 13:56, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
- The first sentence you see both on the initial popup and on the wiki page is: "CLEANMAP is a rough visualisation of what a "ODBL/CT" licensable map would look at this point in time." What is unclear about the word "rough"?.

- more information will be coming asap, the issue is however mentioned in the board minutes of this week.
QA
Could you update the "Edit in iD" link in QA to go to http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?editor=id instead of http://openstreetmap.us/iD/release/ ? The osm.org version doesn't require logging-in via OAuth and seems to be updated more often. Kre3d (talk) 15:14, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
Layout von Diskussionsfäden
@ Simon,

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE_talk:Legal_FAQ
Könntest Du mir da vielleicht weiterhelfen?

Hello! There some concerns about your user page, I would like to hear your opinion on that matter
I would like to hear why you should think your user page should be visible for:
- Category:Video Mapping readers
- Category:Mapping techniques > Category:Video Mapping readers
- Category:OSM Community > Category:Mapping techniques > Category:Video Mapping readers
- Category:Categories > Category:OSM Community > Category:Mapping techniques > Category:Video Mapping readers Xxzme (talk) 08:45, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
- If you had checked the history you would have seen that the video mapping article linked to from this page was originally part of this and was moved later on.
- Okay, in other words, there no objections from your side? Probably we have to update Category:Users by how and when they map with more recent data collection techniques. Xxzme (talk) 09:50, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
VisualEditor bug
Hi Simon, just for your info: you did not really want to create this (already fixed), did you? --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 06:24, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
- Yes that was at least partly VE. SimonPoole (talk) 14:09, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
Missing file information
Hello! And thanks for your upload - but some extra info is necessary.
Sorry for bothering you about this, but it is important to know source of the uploaded files.
Are you the author of image File:Accumulated contributors without mapsme 2018.png ?
Or is it copied from some other place (which one?)?
Please, add this info to the file page - something like "I took this photo" or "downloaded from -website link-" or "I took this screeshot of program XYZ".
In case that you are the author of the image: Would you agree to open licensing of this image, allowing its use by anyone (similarly to your OSM edits)?
Would you be OK with CC0 (it allows use without attribution or any other requirement)?
Or do you prefer to require attribution and some other things using CC-BY-SA-4.0?
If you are the author: Please add {{CC0-self}} to the file page to publish the image under CC0 license.
You can also use {{CC-BY-SA-4.0-self}} to publish under CC-BY-SA-4.0 license.
Feel free to ask for help if you need it - you can do it for example by asking on Talk:Wiki: new topic.
Please ask there if you are not sure what is the proper next step. Especially when you are uploading files that are not your own work or are derivative work (screenshots, composition of images, using aerial imagery etc).
Once you add missing data - please remove {{Unknown|subcategory=uploader notified January 2022}} from the file page.

Copyright
Does file like https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Contributors_per_capita.png is also copyrighted?
Do you think that asking for explicit licensing info is useful in such cases? (maybe not, as it is almost certainly own work)

Missing file information
Hello! And thanks for your upload - but some extra info is necessary.
Sorry for bothering you about this, but it is important to know source of the uploaded files.
Are you the creator of image File:New contributors usa 2016.png ?
Or is it copied from some other place (which one?)?
Please, add this info to the file page - something like "I took this photo" or "downloaded from -website link-" or "I took this screeshot of program XYZ" or "this is map generated from OpenStreetMap data and SRTM data" or "map generated from OSM data and only OSM data" or "This is my work based on file -link-to-page-with-that-file-and-its-licensing-info-" or "used file downloaded from internet to create it, no idea which one".
Doing this would be already very useful.
Licensing - photos
In case that you are the author of the image: Would you agree to open licensing of this image, allowing its use by anyone (similarly to your OSM edits)?
In case where it is a photo you (except relatively rare cases) author can make it available under a specific free license.
Would you be OK with CC0 (it allows use without attribution or any other requirement)?
Or do you prefer to require attribution and some other things using CC-BY-SA-4.0?
If you are the author: Please add {{CC0-self}} to the file page to publish the image under CC0 license.
You can also use {{CC-BY-SA-4.0-self|SimonPoole}} to publish under CC-BY-SA-4.0 license.
Once you add missing data - please remove {{Unknown|subcategory=uploader notified 2022, June}} from the file page.
Licensing - other images
If it is not a photo situation gets a bit more complicated.
See Drafts/Media file license chart that may help.
note: if you took screenshot of program made by someone else, screenshot of OSM editor with aerial imagery: then licensing of that elements also matter and you are not a sole author.
note: If you downloaded image made by someone else then you are NOT the author.
Note that in cases where photo is a screenshot of some software interface: usually it is needed to handle also copyright of software itself.
Note that in cases where aerial imagery is present: also licensing of an aerial imagery matter.

If you are interested in wider discussion about handling licencing at OSM Wiki, see this thread.
(sorry if I missed something that already states license and source: I am looking through over 20 000 files and fixing obvious cases on my own, in other I ask people who upladed files, but it is possible that I missed something - in such case also please answer)

Interested in adding support to JOSM for GSOC
Hi there,
I'm a Computer Science major at Harvey Mudd College, and I'm really interested in potentially working with OSM for GSOC, particularly on your project of supporting Vespucci preset extensions in JOSM. I'm proficient in Java and have some experience working on interactive maps. But I'm new to OSM. I was wondering how you'd recommend getting started and learning about this project.
Thanks --Bennet
- Hi Bennet, have you looked at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2023 ? You will need to have some 1st hand experience with OSM mapping and using JOSM (and potentially Vespucci) do understand the background of the project proposal (this is very much about dog fooding). Further we expect some small contributions to the project or related application in question. Documentation on the JOSM preset system is here https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/TaggingPresets , documentation on the extensions here http://vespucci.io/tutorials/presets/#extensions . One of the things that I would suggest doing is to see if you can get JOSM to build, there is a github mirror of the source code here https://github.com/JOSM/josm that will be easier to work with. Given that communicating via wiki talk pages is a bit awkward, I would prefer communications to simon@osmfoundation.org or my forum account. SimonPoole (talk)
Lake Constance
So there is actually not a border dispute for Lake Constance but involved countries are happy to treat it condominium, so borders overlap without boundary dispute?
Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 18:26, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
- There are no borders in the Lake, they don't overlap, the way it is modelled in OSM is wrong but the simpliest variant. SimonPoole (talk) 10:10, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- So Lake is considered to be outside of either country? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 17:51, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- The area of common administration starts somewhere outside of the immediate lakeside that is about as definite as it gets. BTW there are three countries involved. SimonPoole (talk)

iD images
I withdrew the images you sent: File:Id1.png and File:Id2.png, because you overwrote the images sent by someone else and used in the Welkom op OSM article. Your images are still on the server - you can save them and upload them again under a new name. maro21 20:08, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
